Meet Zakia Warner of Hot Thang Candles in South Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zakia Warner.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am the owner of Hot Thang Candles. I hand pour soy wax candles, melts and an all-natural lip balm. The melted wax from the candles and wax melts can be used as a moisturizer. I thought of finding something I loved and could make into a business…Candles! Everyone loves candles, right? After candle making classes and countless hours research/testing, I started Hot Thang Candles in November 2015. Hot Thang Candles is Black Owned, LGBT Owned and Woman-Owned.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not a smooth road at all! I have had to deal with items being discontinued and being taken advantage of by others. I have just learned that I have to keep pushing and there will always be hardships.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Hot Thang Candles – what should we know?
Hot Thang Candles will make the perfect addition to your home, office or any establishment where you can safely burn candles. The scents of these candles are simply fabulous! Our goal is to make beautiful and amazing smelling soy candles for all to enjoy! Each candle is handmade and hand poured. The wax is 100% soy wax. Soy wax contains no toxins, carcinogens or pollutants which means it’s less likely to trigger allergies. There is no petrol-carbon soot like you get from petroleum-based paraffin candles. These candles are naturally biodegradable which makes accidental spills easier to clean. Each candle can burn for about 40 – 50 hours. Hot Thang Candles uses soy wax only which is a natural moisturizer. The melted wax can be used as cuticle oil; to soften dry parts on your body or as massage oil. The fragrances are safe for skin as well. I tested these on myself because I have very sensitive skin. The result was a soft hand with a delightful fragrance.

Also, I make an all-natural lip balm which some have said is the best they’ve ever used!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being open and honest. Not afraid to take risks and be in support of others.
