Today we’d like to introduce you to Zach Galarza.
Zach, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Oddly I never had an interest in photography until I was in my mid-twenties. One day I was driving through downtown Los Angeles and just happened to look up through my sunroof during a red light. The architecture above me looked amazing, so I took a photo with my then iPhone 5. I edited the photo in black and white and fell in love with the process. That was the beginning of my journey. Soon after that, I expanded to photographing people, mostly portrait with some fashion work. I also want to mention that I’m self-taught, meaning I don’t have any formal education in photography. I would say my biggest milestone was learning how to incorporate flash into my work. This really expanded what was possible for me to achieve creatively and the quality at which I could do so. A year and a half ago, I started specializing in product and transitioned my business to where it is today. Currently, TIMEZAC Photography specializes primarily in commercial advertising product photography.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Any journey worth traveling has its challenges. For me and my business, there have been a number that I’ve had to deal with and continue to overcome. Most are common in the photography industry, such as adding new clients, how to advertise most effectively, etc. However, the challenge with any newer business (especially a creative one) is building connections and relationships that translate to jobs. I learned that I have to keep pushing every day. Even shooting personal projects and getting your work seen helps generate conversations that can lead to work. Also, being self-taught presents its own challenges, there hasn’t anyone there showing me the way or how to do something. I’ve had to learn photography from the ground up and create my own unique style.
TIMEZAC Photography – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business TIMEZAC Photography specializes in commercial advertising photography. The majority of my work deals with product from various industries (cosmetic, beauty, beverage & food, even furniture & objects). These projects span from full campaign advertisements to social media marketing to basic e-commerce assets. I also do a good amount of portraiture, mostly for professional individuals and editorial applications. I pride my work on being of exquisite quality and service. Everything from the equipment that I use to my process of how I photograph an object or person is shot with the utmost quality & care.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My bottom line to success is creating amazing imagery & having an ecstatic client. It’s really as simple as that.
