Meet Zach Frank of One of a Kind in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zach Frank.

Zach, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am classically trained as an abstract expressionist painter but for about 4 years now I had an idea to start a clothing line: One of a Kind. I wanted to make 1-of-1 pieces, specifically T-shirts, that have my poetry, writings, and questions hand embroidered directly into the garment. I was driving on the 101 in late September 2018 and had a moment where I decided today was the day it would begin. I immediately got off the highway, went to Joann Fabrics, and started to learn how to sew & embroider. Within the first week of making clothes, people were buying my garments. A few months later in January 2019 we officially launched the clothing line.

There are two tags on each shirt denoting the number from our series; each tag is hand sewn and takes about 45 minutes to sew each tag. In fact, we’ve stuck with the same tag fabric since shirt number 000001. I have sewn about 450 one-of-one garments in the first year and a half, and on our 1-year anniversary in January of 2020, I had my debut runway with One of a Kind.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been smooth in some capacity; considering the age of my brand and cost of my clothing. I would say that starting any clothing line is challenging but finding people to buy $200-500 t-shirts within the first few months of starting a project is somewhat audacious. I have an extremely loyal and supportive clientele and fan base that’s helped validate my unique ideas. There have been tremendous lessons along the way; but that is to be expected when learning new crafts and launching new businesses. I enjoy the unexpected bumps in the road- clothing is so new to me, and I am already finding success in it; I’ve come to enjoy struggles, they almost always result in a new lesson learned.

Tell us more about the business.
One of a Kind is a very special clothing line; our fans often say they’re rocking “wearable art” and I would agree. OOAK is not overly complex- the original garments are all hand sewn 1-of-1’s. Every piece has hand embroidered tags denoting the number from our collection. We specialize in t-shirts, sweaters, and jackets often with poetic and youthful quotes. All of these designs, imagery, and quotes are conceived by me; I also sew all of these garments myself. I am excited about the direction we are moving with the garments, by summer of 2020, all of our pieces will be made with sustainable materials & will all be cut and sewn in DTLA.

Some exciting moments have happened along the way- about four months after launching the clothing line, I sold a t-shirt for $1,000 – it merely said “This shirt cost $1,000” and the buyer was more than proud to purchase this piece and wear it. I’ve created over 450 original garments in the year and a half that we have been in existence.

There is a magnificent sensation when wearing my clothes; not only are you the only person on earth with this piece, the hand-crafted elements creates an embroidered texture that is undeniable intriguing.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think the fashion world and its patrons will continue to find value and appreciation in exclusivities. People are so passionate to express themselves through their wardrobe; even regular common day people want to make statements within their appearance. I am so excited to watch the clothing line grow throughout my lifetime. I’m looking forward to hiring talented seamstresses and embroiders to complete more projects. I’m excited to watch how the content evolves naturally as I grow older.

I see this clothing line being very respected and well known in the streetwear scene. I foresee original garments being resold for more than their original price, similar to shoe culture. It will be very exciting to watch my clothes be worn by various celebrities and unique people all over the world; after all, the brand celebrates the individual in all of us.

  • Our original t-shirts start around $170
