Meet Yvonne Mwazo of Styled By Yvonne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yvonne Mwazo.

Yvonne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always loved fashion! Since I was a little girl my sister, my mom and I would always go shopping to buy new outfits for church on Sunday’s it was like our girls day out. I loved bonding with my mom and sister through fashion but I started getting in trouble with my dad when I was in high school for always cutting my clothes. Like any normal African dad he was not having it but that didn’t stop me from always being creative and it eventually lead me to start my first business Reina Africana.

In the summer of 2016 I was selling distressed jeans to my friends, people I meet at events I was going to because they always liked what I had on. I’ve had a couple of girls ask me to buy the jackets I had on and I definitely sold them at the end of the night ahah … I was also cutting up t-shirts . I got a sowing machine and started making Ankara chokers, selling gold African chains which is definitely my best selling piece for the past 2 years. Right now Reina Africana is currently selling authentic African jewelry hand beaded by the women of Kenya.

I’ve always wanted to be a designer and have my own clothing line. That takes a lot of time and money so I knew I had to start somewhere, being a stylist is the way for me to get my clients to trust me and introduce myself to the fashion industry. I’ve been a stylist since January 2017 and to honest being a wardrobe stylist is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I am allowed to create my own schedule, work with so many different people, go to amazing locations and most importantly make my clients feel and look amazing in whatever they are wearing.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a stylist is not as easy as most people think. It has not been a smooth road for me, I grew up in the Inland Empire which is about an hour to two hours away from LA I was not connected to anybody and I had to put myself in positions to get the experience I needed to elevate myself. I have tried to reach out to several celebrity stylists and many of them weren’t responsive and at first I was upset but I then realized I am in my own lane and I can’t count on other people to take me to the top, I just need to practice my skill and get familiar with industry and with time preparation will meet opportunity. Like most jobs we deal with rude customers or clients I have dealt with my fair share especially In the industry I’m in people love yo go Hollywood on you but my main focus is to make my clients happy so if there is an issue I will do my best to resolve it and make sure I leave with a satisfied client.
