Meet Yvette Carrillo of May.Rah.Kee.Studio in Fullerton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yvette Carrillo.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Yvette. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been in the beauty industry for over 10 years. I started my career as a freelance makeup artist in Los Angeles area specializing in beauty, bridal and special event makeup. I soon after became a permanent artist with MAC Cosmetics. I quickly found my passion for all things brows. I love all aspects of a makeover, but I have a special love for brows. I should have known when I shaved my eyebrows off in middle school! I would shave them to draw them back on with my desired shape. I really had a thing for brows! When I first started with Mac I would get most of the challenging makeups, girls with no eyebrows, tattooed eyebrows or overly painted eyebrows. I quickly learned to adapt and get creative with makeup and achieve the most natural brow possible. I also learned how to correct old PMU with makeup and teach my clients how to do that at home. I quickly became the go-to brow person I loved it! That love led me into the PMU world. I was always against the older PMU techniques but when microblading came about I fell in love! I love the ability to create the most natural looking eyebrows and the ability to correct symmetry or shape issues in a natural way! I am all about saving time and money when it comes to makeup! Microblading allows you to do just that. Most of my client base are working professionals or busy moms that don’t necessarily have the time or energy to spend 20-30 min on drawing up eyebrows or want to continue the search for the magical long wear product. I love that I get to help them out with waking up with natural ready to go polished brows that will last throughout their busy day.

Has it been a smooth road?
With anything in life, there will always be challenges and obstacles. Having your own business initially sounds wonderful and perfect but the reality is very different! I assumed I was gonna open the doors and the clients were gonna come rushing in. I mean I had an existing clientele and a decent social media following boy was I wrong! I had to learn the art of marketing and business aspects and I had a lot of moments where I doubted if I should have even gone into business. I started doubting my artistry and myself. There were a lot of low moments and thoughts of quitting, I now know this is normal in any new business in the beginning. Thankfully my husband always pushed me to keep going and would talk me off the ledges I was on. With any new business, it takes a few years for it to really take off and build a solid clientele. I have been in business for a year and a half and I’m proud to say we are continuing to flourish and grow. I’m so grateful I didn’t quit when I was feeling like that was what I needed to do. There’s a learning curve and you can’t let one or a few bad days get to you. You take those moments and grow from them and improve. I went back to school and took business classes to help me. I am also always constantly searching for the latest and greatest in my field. You will never know it all. There is always room to grow! The key is to keep learning to overcome obstacles and challenges.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the May.Rah.Kee.Studio story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in microblading which is a technique of permanent makeup. I create natural brows by drawing each individual hair with a manual tool that resembles a blade. With each hair (stroke) I create I implant pigment into the skin. This technique (microblading) can last up to 2 years with an annual touch up. What I’m most proud of is the exceptional customer service I strive to give and the knowledge I give my clients before we move forward with the procedure. I like for my clients to really understand what they are getting and how to maintain them for months to come. I am also very proud of how natural brows look once they are healed. I believe what helps me achieve that is the fact that no two brows are the same in my studio. I don’t have a universal brow shape or design. I tailor each brow set to each clients lifestyle, facial features and natural hair growth and shape. I tell my clients this is a relationship and partnerships we need to work together to achieve their brow goals. Because let’s be honest we might like a brow on a celebrity but that might not necessarily be flattering for you. So we work together to achieve a version of that.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The industry is definitely growing very rapidly, new techniques like ombré and powder brows and hybrid brows which are a mixture of Strokes and shading are gonna be the next “hot trend” I am currently training in these techniques and am so excited to offer these service soon.

  • Microblading can range between $300 -$1000
