Meet Yuri Boiarsky of Krav Maga Of Orange County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yuri Boiarsky.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Yuri. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have 34 years of training/teaching experience both in the US and internationally. I am a 3rd Degree Black Belt/ Advanced Civilian Law Enforcement Instructor Certified. I trained and became an instructor in Netanya, Israel under Mr. Eli Avikzar (Imi Lichtenfeld’s, founder of Krav Maga, top student at the time). I received my black belt from Imi Lichtenfeld himself. I hold a 3rd Degree Black belt from the Israeli Krav Magen Association (K.A.M.I.) under Avi Abeceedon, 10th Dan, Head, and Chairman of K.A.M.I. I am a graduate of the School for Instructors at the Wingate Institute in Israel for Martial Arts Education. I am a graduate of the Senior Instructor program from the Academic College at Wingate in Israel for Martial Arts Education.

I am the second in the world to receive this prestigious certificate. I was teaching the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) as well as civilians and law enforcement personnel in Israel. I provided training to Israeli security forces protecting embassies and consulates as well as local law enforcement agencies in the U.S. I have been teaching with Krav Maga of Orange County since 2001. In addition to Krav Maga, I have trained in Aikido, Boxing, kickboxing and Thai boxing. In addition to teaching adults, I am a certified km-X, (Krav Maga for Kids) Instructor and the head of the program in our schools. In 2009 I co-founded the Krav Maga Martial Arts and Training Center in Mission Viejo. I currently serve as a faculty member of the MMA Conditioning Association. I am an NRA certified pistol instructor and a certified Law Enforcement Instructor.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I had trained and become an instructor in Israel at the studio of the founder of Krav Maga teaching civilians and military personnel. After the mandatory military service in Israel, I came to the US and married by girlfriend. She became a career diplomat and we spent the next eight years travelling and working overseas in different posts.

I was teaching Krav Maga to both US and Israeli security forces protecting embassies and consulates. As we returned to Orange County, I became a full-time senior manager at a consulting firm. I was looking for a place to practice my passion and stumbled upon Krav Maga of Orange County where I became an instructor and later an owner/partner. In the beginning, I was teaching Krav Maga as a hobby after a busy day of work. We were subleasing two locations and treated the program as a hobby for the enthusiasts. In 2008, we lost both of our subleases within 30 days of each other and were debating how to continue the program. At that point, we decided to seriously focus on the growth of our program and business and signed long term leases in two locations in the middle of the recession. We were fortunate that the program grew to a point where it needed a full-time manager.

At that time in 2011, I quit my corporate position as a Vice President and Partner in a firm, took a major salary cut, and decided to dedicate my time and energy to a passion that I have been pursuing for more than two decades. From a group of 50 students and four instructors, Krav Maga of Orange County has grown to several hundred students, 25 instructors. The program evolved to include kids, adults, law enforcement, women’s self-defense, college prep classes, classes in self-defense and corporate training. New programs and markets are currently under development. We are the largest Krav Maga program in Orange County providing safety training to the community. I have been honored and privileged to be a part of this selfless group of individuals willing to help others learn how to stay safe and protect others.
