Meet Yu Shi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yu Shi.

Yu, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Originally from China, I grew up in an incredibly supportive family. I started playing piano at age five. Since then, music has been a very important part of my life.

I came to the USA to pursue my Masters in Science of Finance degree at Illinois Institute of Technology. After graduation, I moved to NYC to start my career in Finance field. After a few years, I went to work at Goldman Sachs, the best investment bank in the world.

Working on Wall Street was an amazing experience. I loved working with other intelligent professionals who held themselves to very high standards. I gained tremendous knowledge and great experience in investment, finance and critical transferrable skills as a strong business person.

However, I realized that the corporate world did not allow me to express my creative talent.

After the long days in the office, I would attend night classes at the Juilliard School to study music composition. My professor Dr. Raymond Lustig inspired me to seek new adventures, never fear failure, and continue to become the best version of myself possible. Meanwhile, I discovered many exciting music project opportunities but I didn’t have enough time to pursue them while working full-time.

So I took a leap of faith. I left my job at Goldman Sachs and moved to Los Angeles to pursue my dream as a music composer!

After moving to Los Angeles, I met the founders of Pantawit Music Production (PMP) at a UCLA music business class and immediately we started working on multiple projects together.

PMP is an awesome team of talented music composers, musicians, editors and business professionals. We create high quality and customized music for films, TV series, video games and any events that need music. I have been working with people from all over the world on different projects. It has always been an amazing experience working as a team to create something awesome together since we are united by our love and passion for music!

So far, I have composed music for short films, feature films, TVs and podcasts.

Meanwhile, my concert music has been performed live in New York City and Italy.

Recently, I have been working on a music project called the Music of Lines. The goal of project is to build connections across industries and cultures. Music is a special art, a universal language that can bring people together. My goal is to increase social awareness regarding important issues and share exciting ideas by using music as the tool.

For example, my concert music has been inspired by the trends in global temperature changes, gravitational waves, and bitcoin prices. By combining a piano roll plus a trend line, a new piece of music is in front of you.

If you are interested in knowing more about the project, please go to my website www.yushimusic.com.

Outside of the music world, I work with filmmakers and artists on the business side to create pitch decks. I use my experience in investment banking and finance field to conduct financial data analysis and visualize data based the best interest of the investors to help filmmakers effectively present their stories. What made my pitch deck stands out is my focus on numbers.

As a successful businessman, my dad inspired me to become a great entrepreneur to help people when I grew up. He always told me to keep an open mind regarding my career options. I am glad that I can bring my experience and skills in investment banking to help artists from the business side.

I have created a unique course regarding pitch deck creation which received good feedback from my students. If you are interested in knowing more about the course, please go to www.csharpbusinessconsulting.com.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I am a curious explorer of the world. I have lived in many metropolitan cities in different countries around the world and I have worked in different industries and firms with different cultures.

This experience has taught me to overcome challenges by adapting quickly to new places and to be more resourceful. Switching careers from investment banking into music composition was not easy, but it was not a hard decision to make since I took some time to build up the strengths.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Working as a composer, I compose music for films, TV series, podcasts, concerts and many materials and events that needs music. When I compose to picture, I am driven for improving reading characters’ emotions, understanding storytelling and expressing the emotions with the best composition kills. When I write concert music, I always compose around a social events or an exciting idea where I could break gaps and creating bridges between different industries, cultures and races.

Like I mentioned previously, I work with filmmakers and artists on pitch deck creation. When I was working in investment banking, financial data analysis, and data visualization were my bread and butter. I am glad that I could contribute my finance skills to the entertainment world. Filmmakers often have great talent in storytelling, but when it comes to numbers, it is my time to step in to help with presenting their ideas into visualized charts, graphs and tables that a finance person would love to see. I also created a free online course to help them avoid mistakes that are frequently made in a pitch deck.

What were you like growing up?
Grew up in a loving family, both of my parents are very open-minded. Every summer vacation, they always took me on a road trip to different places to learn about different cultures and taste different foods.

The world is so big but they encouraged me to see further. My interest to the life and curiosity to the earth, then expanded to the universe when my dad bought me a book called The Brief History Of Time, by Stephen Hawking. It took me on a journey of fascinating universe exploration. The journey went even further with a birthday gift of a telescope he got me.

During high school, mathematics was one of my strongest subject, thus I made the decision to attend business school when I started college in Tianjin University of Economics and Finance in China. Inspired by my uncle’s experience of studying abroad when he was young, and other cousins in my family, I came to the US and to study finance.

It’s been a great adventure so far. I learnt to be patient and honest to myself. I learnt to take risk and work hard to achieve my goals.  I am super grateful for my close friends and family who have been very supportive along the way. We share the joy and tears together. There will never be a hard day with their love!
