Today we’d like to introduce you to So Young “Isabella” Sohn.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have a gift that not many people have. I like to create things by drawing or painting with my own unique style.
I am originally from South Korea. I have been drawing my whole life since I was seven years old. I majored in animation. I used to work for ‘Family Guy’ in animation industry. And then I work as a textile designer in fashion industry after moved to America. I currently work as a caricature artist at Universal Studios Hollywood, I do my art shows independently in LA area, I manage my art business selling prints online and offline.
I thought I can turn my passion into business. I thought making artsy items and doing art shows will be something that I will love and what I will keep doing constantly for the rest of my life. So I did it. I draw, I make, I teach, I run my art business. Here I am, I am happy serving local community by doing what I love to do.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Yes and No.
It was tough settling in a new country, new area, new industry.
At first, I had to work so hard to keep the work visa status. After work, I made time to create my own artwork. I drew as much as I can, to find my voice and identity for my business. Thankfully, I have a very supportive family and I went through so many difficult times safe and sound. I realize that I am loved and I am not alone.
B. It is hard to communicate with people whom are not art-related.
I have learned that I need to show what and why I am doing this, to connect with them. So I write or make videos on social media. To communicate how it works and where my passion is. They seem to understand more about the art process and creativity values.
Tell us more about your art.
With a unique artistic voice, my works, stylish and rich in color and texture. Artworks are heavily influenced by animated movies and contemporary fashion. I usually focus on drawing people portraits in various styles using mixed media. It possess undeniable organic warmth and elegance.
Bestseller in art prints is ‘Britney Spears’ and the best seller in T-shirt is ‘Sailor Moon’.
I also draw commissions/caricatures. I am a caricature artist in Universal Studios Hollywood theme park. My specialty is to draw people very quickly catching features/ characters in 5 min or so (Black and white marker sketch). I use airbrush for vibrant colors.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Good luck is to have many great opportunities out here in LA/Hollywood.
I get to know a lot of awesome people and amazing artists. I also feel lucky to have met my boyfriend Dustin who does not want to lift heavy things for my art show but doing it anyway because I ask so. haha.
Oh, and I have adopted the cuuuttest dog named ‘Cooper’. He is my son, he was homeless and I rescued him from a shelter in Melrose. I work also to make profits to donate and support homeless animals just like Cooper.
Bad luck I went into car accidents several times in LA, I guess I am a bad driver. Thank God I am alive!
