Today we’d like to introduce you to Yolanda (Yolee) Stewart.
Yolanda (Yolee), please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My story began as a thought, which then led to a larger discussion among some of my close friends. Growing up in NYC, I always found myself surrounded by immigrants, and the 1st-generation/2nd generation born Americans. I myself, being a 1st generation Jamaican-American, found it interesting to be a part of two opposing cultures and somehow managing to navigate both effortlessly.
Sometimes the duality of both my culture and nationality caused me to question my own identity and which group(s) I fit in. My journey for this series is on-going, as I mentioned before. I’m still growing my YouTube platform, but as of right now I use my personal Instagram page to promote the show and use IG live to interview guests, engage with viewers and I post all of the content on IGtv. At this moment, 1st Generationerz is undergoing some serious revamping and rebranding, so stay tuned!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road at all. Not to be pessimistic, but I’m sure many many more challenges await me and 1st Generationerz as it continues to grow. A few examples I can think of were and still are moments of self-doubt in the validity and purpose of the show itself; finding the drive to produce content weekly; not gaining immediate recognition and maintaining consistency given the circumstances of everything that’s going on in the world. Support is a key for me and it feels like I haven’t had much of that lately, but I keep telling myself not to give up. The support will come, what matters is quality and that’s what I want to give the people before I gain quantity.
Please tell us about 1st Generationerz.
1st Generationerz is an interview-based Youtube and IG series that highlights the challenges, successes, and overall experiences of first-generation American born and/or bred millennial. All of the guests are of varying diasporas and cultures, so everyone’s story is different. My brand specializes in authentic story-telling directly from the source’s mouth. I am proud of the way we give the guests their own spotlight to freely share as much as they want. We ask thought-provoking questions, have different topics and segments, we discuss negative or misconstrued stereotypes about different ethnic groups, and bridge cultural gaps through knowledge. What sets us apart is that this show is made by and for 1st Generationerz. It is not scripted, everything we say and do is real and in the moment.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t think luck was a part of this at all. If anything, I’d say it was a leap of faith and manifesting the belief in the importance of this show.
