Meet Yelena York

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yelena York.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I became a full-time artist 5 years ago and made it into a career 2 years ago. Having interest in interior design, graphic design and photography pushed me to start creating works that were and are part of me, and I think it plays a huge role in artists career when you create what interests you, instead of making paintings because it sells or its pleasing to the eye. I could take the short cut and make works that will take max 3 hours of my life and keep producing hundreds of them, but instead of making I wanted to create, and there is difference in those two words. Each piece I start I know it can take from 3 months to 13 months and I am mentally ready for it, it is who I am. A relationship built within hours can be lost as quickly, and that’s how I look at my Art and my career in the Art world.

Before building a relationship with my collectors and the galleries who are on the same level as I am, fist I needed to know what kind of outcome I want from what I do, and am I after the 5-minute fame or a life time reputation. Knowing who the Artist is as an individual, is as important as the art he/she creates, just like the personality of a Chef is as important in his restaurant as the food he makes, sometimes we go to a restaurant because of the Chef, just like we might purchase an art piece, because of who the Artist is and not the other way around. So, I think where I am today having a lot to do with both, the quality of my work and who I am as a person.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course every new path you take has its own struggles, unless you have a very famous last name, and your whole career can be made with one phone call. 🙂 I love every road I take, the easy ones and the ones that might make me cry for days, probably that’s what makes me who I am today. I never needed “mentors”, because I believe you have to try and experience everything first hand, as it’s the only way you will remember and learn.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am known for my pointillism works that are done with million layers of ink dots put together and also my huge life size paintings. Besides the original works, this year I started doing Limited edition prints of my art pieces, also taking projects like making decor pieces like wallpapers, rugs, pillows etc. I try to keep everything original and closer to my style what I am knows for to set apart from what’s out there in the market.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Future goals would be, slowly getting my feet into more and more production companies, who handle fashion and interior design and take it from there.

  • Original Art Works go from $30,000 – $250,000
  • Limited Edition Prints and costume designs go from $2,500 – $15,000
