Meet Yasuko Kawamura of Bliss Squared Massage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yasuko Kawamura.

Yasuko, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I found my passion in massage therapy purely by an accident. Originally, I was a computer engineer for 12 years. After leaving the engineering job, I was exploring different opportunities for several years. One day, I came home for lunch and encountered a scene of infidelity by my ex-boyfriend. When we confronted, he said she was a “good masseuse.” Because he said that, I started to look for a massage class to learn how to give a massage.

Unfortunately, I could not find any classes for people who wanted to learn how to casually massage your loved ones at home. The smallest class I could find was 100-hour Intensive Swedish Massage Class at a local massage school. Determined, I paid almost $1,000 and signed up for the class.

In massage classes, you pair up with your classmate to practice on each other which is fabulous. One time, I was practicing on a big guy and he fell asleep and started snoring (and drooling) on the massage table. Believe or not, I found it very healing for me to give healing to other people. I went ahead and signed up for the 1,000-hour Holistic Health Practitioner program and became a Licensed Massage Therapist.

Since I couldn’t find the casual massage classes for non-professionals, I created my own. I also remembered that in my home country of Japan, it is customary for kids to tap the shoulders of parents and grandparents to show love and respect.

I currently teach the massage techniques over the clothes. I find these techniques more practical than using a massage table, massage oil, and disrobing. I want people to enjoy each other’s healing touch at home as well as during vacation at the airport and even in front of the kids.

Often people shy away from massaging their loved ones because they had hurt their fingers and back giving a massage in the past. After showing the right tricks, I am in heaven when the massage giver says “Oh this is easy!” while the massage receiver simply says “Ahhhh…” with a smile.

Has it been a smooth road?
The challenge is that people think I provide Couples Massage service where two people getting massages side-by-side by two massage therapists. However, sometimes people looking for Couples Massage service find my class more interesting and intimate than getting the one-time massage side-by-side.

Another challenge is the common assumption that the massage is such a hard chore or that your partner isn’t interested. I had a husband who assumed his wife was not interested while the wife wished he would take my class with her.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Bliss Squared Massage – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Besides providing massages, I specialize in teaching Couples Massage Class to whoever wants to learn easy massage techniques without hurting your hands. Even a person with arthritis on her hands is able to give a good massage to her partner. I love that I get to provide a casual way to connect with your partner physically while reducing the stress and tension.

I also created online video course for those who want to learn the massage techniques at the comfort of your own home.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like the mixture of different ethnicities. I wish the ethnic restaurants are open late.
