Meet Yara Cadena of Nixey Artistry in Orange

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yara Cadena.

Yara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
OOOOO… that’s a long story! I was a crazy athlete in high school and my senior year I got hurt pretty bad. I didn’t know what I was going to do without sports. My parents made me go to college which I’m super thankful for now. I went to FIDM in LA. Got a degree in Graphic Design and then I decided I actually hate being in front of a computer. Turns out, I liked people more than a monitor. So I needed to work and I got a job at the kiosks in the mall that sold True Colors. It was the powder shadows that you can add water to and make them change in texture.

I loved all the colors, the people, the make up world! It was awesome! I then decided to get a job in a retail store which at that time was RobMay, I’m old!!! From there, I moved on to a couple of other retailers until I made it to Neiman Marcus… That’s where the real fun started. I was in cosmetics working with Laura Mercier and slowly transitioned into a personal shopper. At some point, I realized I wasn’t doing what I loved anymore. I wasn’t doing makeup at all. I had an unfortunate accident and was no longer able to work for a couple of years. I saw that as a sign that I needed to go back to my roots and so I did!

I started reaching out to different people and allowing IG to be my platform. I have met so many amazing people on this journey! I am self-taught. I watch others work and take it all in. I have learned from actually placing my hands and brushes on all different kinds of faces! I love the feeling of handing over a mirror when I’m done and seeing the reaction I get when they take that first glance. That’s one of the best moments of my job. I never stop hustling, I never stop reaching out, I never stop working. I love my job so much. Its been a journey and this is just the beginning…

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t. There’s been a lot of dead ends and connections that mean nothing. The hardest thing I’ve had to learn is rejection. But I realized I’m not everyone’s flavor and that’s ok. I’ve had to do a ton of free work to get myself out there which is really hard because I’m a mom of four boys. Leaving them for free was rough, but it lead to where I am now. Worth every free penny!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Nixey Artistry story. Tell us more about the business.
The name of my company is Nixey Artistry. People always ask me what that means. As I mentioned before, I have four boys:
-Nathan
-Isaac
-Xavier
-Ezekiel
-Yara

When you look at my logo, there is a 2 next to the N above the I… I have a husband who is also named Nathan(my biggest fan) so I look at it as Nathan to the power of two… I really specialize in makeup. I recently have been asked to do hair, so I bought a mannequin head and started practicing!

I love Bridal, I get to be a part of one of the best days in someone life! Does it get better than that? I love Photoshoots. People at their best showing the world how amazing they are. Does it get better than that?

I love film. Creating something with other creative people and seeing your final project come to life. Does it get better than that? I think what sets me apart is my ability to listen to the client. Create what they want not what I want…

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I wouldn’t call it good or bad luck, but an example of turning situations around on many shoots where I was not getting paid, I have met the best most wonderful people who then turned around and hired me for bigger jobs…
