Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Simons.
Will, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Ever since I was little, I always had a creative mind. I always had these ideas and visions that I wanted to express and create. I dipped my hand in performing, acting and modeling, but one thing that always stuck out to me in these experiences, were the people behind the cameras. I was always curious and interested in what they were doing behind there. So in 2004, I purchased my first DSLR camera and it would go on to be the best purchase I’ve ever made. I would grab friends and create fun photoshoots. Hair, makeup, fun settings, the whole thing. Each shoot I did would feed my creativity more and more. Jump to years later. I’m older, wiser, and I have a new camera. Life has done its thing. Experiences, relationships, trials, heartache…all of which have molded my mind into a bomb of creativity, waiting to go off. I went through a pretty scary, dark time personally and I would be lying if I didn’t say that a big chunk of my concepts and ideas come from these past memories and experiences I’ve had. I’m a big believer that there is beauty in EVERYTHING. Even in the ugliest of situations, there’s something beautiful there…and I take it upon myself to find it and give it life. Not always, but I tend to focus on experiences, stories I hear, current Political issues that affect me, and use those to bring out an idea or concept for a shoot.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not a smooth road. Like every artist, I’ve had my fair share of doubt and just being scared that I’m not good enough. I have come to the realization and understanding that those feelings are worthless and have no control over my work and what I do. Nothing will stop me from photographing what I want. Aside from having a hard time choosing between shots to edit and models to choose from, I honestly would say that the only obstacle or challenge I sometimes have, is picking between locations to use. Living in this beautiful city of Los Angeles, there are so many places, locations and Studios to choose from.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Will Simons Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Will Simons Photography is my photography business. I am the sole owner and operator. I specialize in working with models, to help build their portfolios and websites. When I started Will Simons Photography, the only intention I had was to be able to shoot the photos I wanted to shoot. I think in the photography business/world, people get so caught up in wanting to make money right away, so they shoot anything and everything. Headshots, weddings, babies etc. There’s nothing wrong with that, I respect all artist, but I personally don’t enjoy shooting these types of institutionalized photos. I want to shoot and create what I have envisioned. When I really started to adapt to the philosophy of not caring about money and changing its meaning in my life, the freedom to shoot whatever I want followed and so did the business. My work specializes, but is not limited to male models. I know what looks good, I can relate more and I’m a lot more comfortable when shooting male models. I am most proud of being able to open people’s minds with my work. To get a conversation starting and people sharing their experiences in relation to one of my photos. I love when that happens.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
In the future I plan on having my own studio and to increase the amount of shoots I do. Big sets, beautiful locations, up my production value and just create photos that people around the world talk about. I have a few upcoming shoot ideas in the works. I am currently outlining and planning them out now. Stay tuned.
