Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Luna.
Will, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in Ventura County in a small town called Simi Valley. My dad has worked in the motion picture industry his whole life, while my mom stayed at home mom raising me while I raced amateur motocross. It was my life from the time I was 12 to 20. My pops is a KEY GRIP in the studios, he’s worked on a majority of Adam Sandler’s movies, Blink 182 and Greenday music videos. My mom was always filming me growing up and with my dad being in the industry, I was kind of destined towards a creative career. When I was 17, I bought my first DSLR, a Canon 7d. At first, I was just shooting friends and for fun but then I began to catch some jobs with friends and clients that I’ve dreamed of working with. Action sports is a huge part of my life and that’s where I have met some of my best friends.
Over the past ten years of being a photographer I’ve learned so much, I have had the opportunity to see so much of this beautiful planet, meet amazing people, gain new relationships, try new things and step outside my comfort zone. Being a photographer is not the easiest career. You have to want it and want to work really hard. It’s taken me the last decade to build a client list, a portfolio, and figure out what I like to shoot frequently. Building relationships along the way, failing and failing again, yet always finding the persistence to stand back up and try again…The highs are so high, and the lows are very low. Creative blocks are a real thing when you’re a creative and they happen often in a world that feels like everything has already been done, but you fight through them, knowing you bring something new to the table and you will come out of the rut stronger! Photography has been a blessing, it’s become my life and passion. I am so grateful for the places it has taken me, thankful for everyone who has taken a chance on me and loved my work because I work my ass off to be the best version of myself. In the last few years, I’ve had the pleasure of shooting for SONY, Honda & Redbull, HOTELTONIGHT, MVMT, lululemon, Intel, Zillow, Stella Artois, just to name a few. I am creative by natural and storytelling through photos is how my vision comes to life. This year I am working on a few personal projects with friends, building branded content, directing a few Docs, and moving into a realm of shooting film!
The past few years film has been a big staple in my life/workflow… To me, my film speaks to me a lot more, works with my vision and tells my story, I have shoeboxes full of film and memories over the last ten years. To me, there is nothing better than looking at a 4×6 in hand, I love to have full creative control over my imagery from start to finish… Shout out to PhotoLab OC for taking care of all my film needs! Today, I am living in beautiful Costa Mesa, California where I have been for the past three years and loving every second of it. I’ve always been a beach baby growing up, I lived in San Luis Obispo during college years, then went to Santa Monica for a few years where I was an Assistant editor at a Post Production house and we worked on Honda/Acura Sports.. I will be 30 this coming January and am looking forward to my next decade, I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would say the biggest one for me would be not knowing where your next job is coming from. If you believe in yourself and your value you bring to the table, you should have no need to worry. Most of the time photoshoots never go perfect either, you have to learn and get good at adapting in critical situations, especially when client is on set depending on line of work. 75% of my work client is usually never on set so I don’t have to worry too much because they know what they are getting out of hiring me.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’d say I specialize mainly in Action Sports & Lifestyle Photography, as well as in the Commercial/Hospitality Photography. Traveling is a huge part of my business so I love shooting hotels and restaurants where ever I go and whenever I can. Anything 2 or 4 wheels runs in my blood so I will always say yes to shooting and getting a chance to be creative. Working with my friends is a big reason why I love this job so much, we are all so talented and I love getting together with them and creating magic for they’re own personal brands and brands we back and believe in. I also love to shoot BTS on set in the Motion Picture industry, I’ve been thankful to build some awesome relationships in my career with friends and family and work with some amazing talent. And lastly, I do some tour photography a few months out of the year with some acts such as WhatSoNot, Rufus De Sol, Arizona, Jauz, OOkay. Id like to say my work is very versatile and I’m good at shooting in many different situations. I like to problem-solve and am very good in heated situations when things matter and I need to show up and be all in.
What were you like growing up?
I never spent a day inside growing up unless I had to eat or sleep. I’ve always been an “outsider” as I like to call it, lol. I am a people person and don’t have a mean bone in my body. I was always skateboarding, riding bmx, racing motocross or snowboarding my whole childhood. I made it through middle school and by 9th grade, I began to be Homeschooled because I was traveling and riding so much as a kid. It was an amazing time and I got to travel all over the US with my friends racing and having fun. As a kid I was always trying to get into crazy things with my neighbors and being out till the street lights came on, I was never into video games as a kid unless it had to do with motorcycles, so I would just come home from school and play with my RC cars and planes or be out in the hills with friends just riding bikes and getting into all kinds of things.
