Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Olschwanger.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I moved to LA almost 11 years ago to begin working in the fashion industry and I have remained in this industry my entire time in the city. My first job here was as a Personal Shopper at Nordstrom at the Grove and since I have worked for Theory, Helmut Lang, Satine, Net-A-Porter and Forty Five Ten. I have learned so much about the industry as I have worked in sales, styling, merchandising and buying and now I am back to styling. I now have my own personal shopping/brand consulting company.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been smooth, but I have been very fortunate to have met my mentor early along the way. The biggest challenges are finding ways to grow into bigger and more creative roles when I always also worked in sales. Another challenge is the constantly changing industry and making sure that my ideas are always elevated and modern as well as ways to help brands see significant growth.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I first started my personal shopping company because I wanted to get to know clients on a more personal level. I wanted to be able to dive deep into their wardrobes and get to know their lifestyles, about their families, favorite things to do as hobbies, their careers and other interests. I also love what I do because I can help people have more confidence in themselves and allow them to feel more put together and creative in their daily lives. I try to encourage my clients to create their own style in what feels good for them when they wake up in the morning.
I also work about 50-50% with men and women. My first eight years, I worked primarily with women, my next two primarily with men and my last year, I have been focused on the balance of men’s and women’s.
My background is a mix of sales, styling, personal shopping and consulting for brands to help with merchandising and getting them into the right stores.
I am most proud of working with amazing people (clients) that have been close friends and brands that I have been able to show to clients and help them grow, whom of which have also become close friends.
I take pride in the fact that I can style items but also know what will sell well and have the most use in one’s wardrobe.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Communication with clients and brands and the ability to listen is key. Making sure clients feel comfortable and happy is extremely important. I also think it is important to be super knowledgeable about brands, understanding body types, having a wide range of brand knowledge and understanding different price points and overall just loving what I do and learning everyday.
