Today we’d like to introduce you to Geoffrey Brummett.
Geoffrey, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up doodling & drawing but that laid mostly dormant through my teen years. I found creativity in skateboarding and myspace when that was a thing. My first experience with photoshop was creating my own background images for my page. I use to spend hours on that thing, not being social but browsing for new music to skate to. I skateboarded for about 7 years ending it around the time I decided to go away to college. I really had no idea what I wanted to do so I went back to my art roots. I declared a fine art major at first but quickly learned of graphic design and decided that better aligned with my ideal pursuits. I had to take a photography course as an elective and decided to add that as a second major. Getting towards the end of my college career I really wanted to be a photojournalist. I thought entering the military as a Combat Camera Operator would be the best way to go about that. For a multitude of reasons, I ended up deciding against it. Once I graduated I moved back home but quickly started pursuing design jobs. I managed to land one at Fullscreen, inc. which at the time was a budding mid-level startup MCN. I was a really green graphic designer having never been exposed to clients, their expectations and that level of creativity necessary to get the job done. It was a great learning experience. It was also the first time I was exposed to “Product” design. The VP of Product at that point was a real inspirational manager. Although the graphic design & product teams operated separately we’d always sync up during lunches, happy hours etc. From that exposure, I knew I wanted to build products. I went to a startup called Tapiture ( A former subsidiary of The Chive.) I was a UI/brand designer under a UX lead. I learned a new program, not under the Adobe umbrella (sketch) and proceeded to emerge myself in the startup design world. I learned a ton eventually having to redesign the app suite and website. Tapiture, unfortunately, became another failed startup although we generated revenue and had a user base of three million. I freelanced around while searching for my next move which I had decided should be a digital product/technical agency. I found Sidebench in February and have been here since April. I work on a multitude of products that range from healthcare to social platforms. We have a wide range of clients from well-known media companies to budding startups.
Has it been a smooth road?
No one gets anywhere without struggles. It’s the struggles that make you better. People in the design industry always come in their careers with self-doubt, “Is my work good enough.” The truth is it’s not, but your eye for design is what will help you eventually succeed. Your eye will eventually get you where you need to be.
So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
The healthcare sector I feel will be the next big tech boom barring any economic changes. Interaction/Animation design will soon become a standard for UX/UI designers. Definitely looking to add it to my own arsenal.
Let’s go backward a bit – can you tell us about the most trying time in your career?
Motivation is always hard. Motivation to do your work, to do your work better. I’ve never been the most studious and have often been lazy. It’s an ongoing struggle but it becomes easier with age I’ve found.
Are there days when you feel like you’ve done everything you wanted to, careerwise – the “I’ve made it” kind of moments?
Definitely when I was handed the branding for George Takei’s joint project with AARP on Youtube. I’m a big fan of the man and his work. It was an honor to work on it and see it take shape.
