Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Stokes.
Kristen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always loved photography since I was a little girl, I remember to this day getting a Barbie camera from my mom for Christmas when I was 5 years old. I never considered photography something I could pursue as an adult. Then I signed up for a photography class in community college & fell in love with photography. I had always been interested in the arts but photography was instantly my passion. Since then, I loved getting my friends together to model for me because I had ideas coming mind left and right.
In 2012, I decided to become freelance and I started photographing families, children, weddings, and just everything I could shoot. I’m still finding my groove to be honest. I feel like my life has been taking so many twists and turns that I really have to find what calls to me through my photography. What I do know is I love taking photos of people, so thats what I do.
Has it been a smooth road?
Yes & no, I’ve found out that newborn photography & wedding photography is not for me. I gave it my all for a couple of years but it just didn’t fit.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’ve always wanted to have my own gallery. I have a new project in the works for this upcoming year that is very close to my heart. It’s going to be dedicated to my mom who recently passed this past summer.
Let’s explore some of the challenges you’ve faced along the way. What was the most difficult part of your career so far?
Honestly, the last few years have been the hardest. I haven’t been fully in my work like I would like. Both of my parents passed away last year and this year. I finally feel like I’m ready to bring something really positive back into my life through my passion, photography. These last few months, I’ve had the honor in being able to photograph families for the holidays. I usually see a hand full of the same families every year and they always bring a smile to my face. I love seeing the families growing and being able to capture that every year!
What about “Wow-moments” – any moments that stick out? Any moments when you felt like you had made it?
My ‘wow’ moments are when people suggest me to their friends and families, I always feel very humbled. I’m always so grateful to be doing what I truly love. I just love interacting with people and capturing true moments.
