Meet West Los Angeles Artist: Kohshin Finley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kohshin Finley.

Kohshin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born to parents who are both fashion designers, so I was born into a very creative family. When I was young, I would make my own comic books with my own characters or video game characters and tell my own stories. Now that I’m older I’m I find myself still using art to tell my own stories, but through paint and canvas. The stories I tell now range from a young black male trying to find a way to survive in America to a lover looking for a way back into someone’s life. The search for ‘the answer’ is what I find interesting, and with my paintings, I try to capture that feeling.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road is smooth but it sometimes has deep valleys and high hills. No matter what the struggle might be I’ve always been one to push through and be eager to see the next opportunity, while also being very appreciative of what’s in front of me. I happily haven’t struggled much in my life, I try and reflect a very positive light into this world and believe that that been reflected back onto me.

How would you describe the type of kid you were growing up?
Growing up I was always quiet, but very personable. I have been into art since I can remember, every school I’ve ever been in all the students knew me as the “art kid”.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I used to spend every summer in Mexico until I was 14. One summer I had saved up enough pesos to buy a bright red Polaroid i-Zone camera, which I believe was my first camera. The film was tiny polaroids with decorative frames and had sticky-backs so I stuck them up all over the house. I took it everywhere and photographed everything. The world became so interesting to me looking at it through that viewfinder.

What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future at to paint more, and photograph more. Looking forward to telling more stories and exploring different avenues within my practice. I try not to plan too much out ahead of time, but just to live positively and be open to opportunities.
