Today we’d like to introduce you to Jocelyn Rivard.
Jocelyn , please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been obsessed with getting my hands on beauty products for as long as I can remember. After moving to Los Angeles at 17, I was inspired by the entertainment industry and knew that I wanted a career in creativity. While studying Fashion Merchandising at Cal State Northridge, I spent time working for various beauty brands including Estée Lauder and Bare Escentuals. Since then, I have established a reputation for bringing out the inner beauty of my diverse clientele. I am most happy when I connect with my clients to deliver results that not only satisfy, but empower them to feel their best. My professional experience in this industry has grown to include services for award shows, to TV shows, to weddings, and events. I am a hardworking, beauty professional, that takes pride in everything I do.
Has it been a smooth road?
Establishing a career in makeup is competitive in Los Angeles. Not being an LA native meant I would need to establish connections on my own. When I was eager to make connections and get busy doing what I love, I would often be forced to take on super low budget jobs. This meant I was always moonlighting on the side. Just like a struggling actress, you could find me waiting tables, babysitting, and selling makeup to pay the rent. Becoming a full-time beauty professional was an earned, dream come true.
Do you feel luck has played a role in your life?
I can’t say that I believe in luck. I often hear “you’re so lucky to be a makeup artist for (blank)”! I cringe. I’ve worked so hard. Giving all the credit to good luck just doesn’t work for me. Besides luck, I do believe in trusting the process. There have been many times in my life that I’ve thought “why am I here?!?” Then I look back and it all makes sense. One opportunity always leads to the next.
Do you feel like there are certain traits that increase the likelihood of success?
Be nice and roll with the punches. Not every job is glamorous. Not everyone you work with is enjoyable to be around. Stay positive, be kind, be helpful, do your best. They will call you for the next gig in the future!
Tell us about your favorite and least favorites things about our city.
I love the opportunities that exist in Los Angeles. Even as a makeup artist, you have so many choices. You can work in film, editorial, celebrity, salon, education… The list goes on. The only draw back from living in Los Angeles is the TRAFFIC. I am the queen of squeezing in as many jobs as possible in a day, but sometimes traffic just doesn’t permit. It’s exhausting.
