Meet West Hollywood Photographer: Nicole Toczauer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Toczauer.

Nicole, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I fell in love with photography in high school. I’d drag my friends out for photoshoots every free moment I got. In college, I became more focused on technique. Manipulating light was my absolute favorite thing to do and I would spend hours in a studio. There came a period though when I didn’t touch a camera for a year or so. I felt creatively lost and exhausted. But I started up again, and since then I’ve had the pleasure to re-explore my passion and meet so many wonderful people. My partner, Dan, has also been so supportive and there’s no way I could do any of this without him.

Has it been a smooth road?
As I mentioned there was a point when I felt creatively exhausted and it seemed I was only doing what people expected me to do, or what they wanted in a project. This past year has been about finding my own voice again. That said, I do strongly believe in listening to others’ ideas. I love collaborating with other creatives.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and career?
Honestly, meeting people is the biggest piece of luck. You bump into someone and can have magic happen. I absolutely love when a team clicks!

Do you feel like there are certain traits that increase the likelihood of success?
Being adaptive- to people, ideas, even weather. It’s about being able to work with what you have. 🙂

What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
Honestly, LA was a love/hate relationship for me at first. It’s sprawled out, can be sketchy in some places and the light can be too bright sometimes, not to mention the lack of variety in seasons. That said, there are so many wonderful, creative people here. There’re so many great locations and the energy is so vibrant.
