Meet West Hollywood Hairstylist: Kyle Hennessy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Hennessy.

Kyle is the ultimate go-getter.  He started cosmetology school at 15 and through hard work and dedication he has achieved a TON of success from appearing in all sorts of media to working with celebrity clientele.  We’re proud of his journey and excited to share his story below.

Kyle, please share your story with us.  How did you get to where you are today?

I started cosmetology school at the age of 15 and was licensed at 17 upon graduating high school in my small town in south east Ohio. At the age of 18 I moved to Columbus, Ohio and started college studying business thinking hair was going to be my way of paying my way through college. Years later I decided that hair was my passion and if I was going to do hair I was going to be the best in the industry which meant moving to LA. Once in LA I have just networked and worked my but up to get where I am now.

Has it been a smooth road?

It has been a complete roller coaster with highs like appearing on TV shows, in magazines, meeting tons of celebrities, fun work trips, to big lows like struggling for years to build a clientele, losing jobs and working 7 days a week for years.

What are your plans for the future?

My goal is to eventually build a big enough brand that I can put out a line of hair products, and eventually hair tools.

Let’s dig a little deeper into your story.  What was the hardest time you’ve had?

One of the hardest parts of my career was a couple year stint where I worked at a salon that I won’t name and felt trapped because I just could not build a clientele big enough to move on to a different salon. I think the struggle was a mixture of me being so shy and quite, the salon, and I wasn’t up to speed with how big of an impact social media has in the hair industry.  The salon eventually closed and I networked my way in to B2V salon (which I’ve wanted to work at since back when I lived in Ohio). Once at b2v I’ve dedicated 100% of my time and energy in to building clients and now I would say I get 90% of my business from Instagram alone.

Do you ever just stop and think WOW – I’ve made it?

I can’t say that I’ve made it yet, but there has been a couple times that I’ve really known that I was on the right track.

One was when my hometown newspaper wrote a front page news story about my journey. The second was when I was doing hair for Katy Tiz for the AMA’s back stage amongst the some biggest stars in Hollywood, (I snapped a selfie for mom with me on the red carpet with a hairbrush and Diana Ross and Fergie in the background)
