Meet West Covina Make-up Artist: Tara Staton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Staton.

Tara, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born in Los Angeles but raised in San Diego. I knew that I wanted to always come back to LA to somehow be involved with the entertainment industry, but not in front of the camera. In my early twenties, I was working for Four Seasons Hotels; I always wore make-up and people nicknamed me TaraMascara. One day, I came to work with a full makeup face and in walked Sam Fine, one of the most admired celebrity make-up artists. He told me that he loved my smokey eye and that gave me a push in the direction I needed. I literally had an Aha moment! I decided to find the best school out there Make-up Designory (MUD) and I worked overnights at the hotel from 11p-7am and then attended school from 8am-5pm. I got two hours of sleep per day but that was all I needed. I had a goal and I was focused I knew what I wanted. I then met my now make-up mentor, Jackie Mgido. She was a teacher there and had been working in the industry for years. She was the one who gave me the guidance I needed and took me under her wing. I became her assistant and the rest is history. I began to work full-force as a make-up artist on TV. I have worked on the Food Network, Bravo, MTV, FYI, ESPN, Fox Sports, and various other commercials and billboards. I have been in the Industry for seven years now.

Has it been a smooth road?
I believe that anything you really want, you have to work hard at. It doesn’t always come easy. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication. I am a single mom and it has always been very difficult finding childcare, but it all works itself out and in the end, everything I do, is for my daughter. She is the most important person in my life and every day she is what pushes me to be the best I can be. I want her to be a strong woman and work hard in the future as well!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and career?
I don’t know if luck really had a part in my career. I feel like everything I have achieved was from hard work and dedication.

Is there a quality or characteristic that has played an outsized role in your success?
I believe that having a strong work ethic is most important to my success.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We have so much opportunity here! We can literally do anything we set our hearts to here! We are lucky to live in the entertainment capital of the world!

Tara is exceptionally talented, skilled, and breathtakingly beautiful, but what outshines all that is that she lives to be an outstanding mother for her daughter and she is dedicated to her craft. She made sure I was ready to go every day on the set of Food Network Star, and was passionate about what she did while balancing life as a single mom. A role model for all you are Miss Tara, and I’m happy to have been in your chair.
