Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Flores.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Wendy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always been a big believer in empowering our children. I do my best to allow my children every opportunity for growth that I can (safely). My daughter took this to another level when one morning after breakfast at the age of two, she walked over to the sink and stated she wanted to wash her dish. Her grandmother told her “No, no puedes. Estas muy chiquita.” My daughter responded with “Si puedo. Yo todo puedo.” My immediate thought was “Hell yeah. Si puedes baby. Claro que si.” I was so proud of her. Proud because she stood up for herself and proud because she owned her power. We let her try and with her head held high she pulled over her step stool and proceeded to wash her dish. I know washing a dish isn’t a huge deal, but it’s all the small moments of empowerment that lead up to the big ones.
I believe it is extremely important for us to empower the youth any and every way we can. Empowered kids will grow to be empowered adults. Can you imagine a new world filled with strong, confident, self-aware humans who know and believe “Si puedo. Yo todo puedo.” ? I can NOT wait for this to come to fruition. One child at a time. One kind act, one hug at a time. A moment of connection to make sure that child feels seen, heard, and important will propel said child towards this crazy world feeling more confident in him/herself. Together we can fight all the craziness going on and Raise Poderosos.
Has it been a smooth road?
I started the brand in March and oh man has it been a learning experience. From overstocking to not having enough merchandise, it’ been rough. Being a full-time mom of three my time is limited. The hardest thing so far I would have to say is time management. Warehouse runs, homeschooling, nap times and actually making the tees definitely keeps me one step from crazy.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Penny Puede – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Penny Puede started as a kids empowerment brand and I’m proud to say it has since expanded to include the whole family. The t-shirt that started it all is the original “Pequena y Poderosa Yo Todo Puedo” which loosely translates to “Small and Mighty. I can do anything.”
What I am most proud of is the small moments when a child’s face lights up after their parent gives them the shirt and tells them what it says. That face full of joy and pride. When they recognize their power. Those smalls moments make my day. Meeting and connecting with like-minded parents, caregivers, and educators and being able to spread the message that kids empowerment is immensely important has been very fulfilling.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Los Angeles is best described as “Crazy Beautiful”. I love what a melting pot of culture it is. Any type of food you want is just a Yelp away. There are so many constituents who are proud of and active in our city and because of that, there is never a lack of carefully curated events to attend.
