Meet Melissa Hsu and Elsa Feng of ME Weddings & Events in Irvine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Hsu and Elsa Feng.

Melissa and Elsa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We started the company in 2010 but had known each other for almost a decade before it all came together. The idea came up after collaborating on Elsa’s wedding in 2009. Elsa was a media buyer and Melissa had been working in the events industry so it seemed like a natural fit.

Neither of us dreamed that it would grow into what it is today. We started out coordinating a couple weddings for friends and friends of friends and instantly fell in love. Since then, we’ve grown to a team of 9 amazing ladies and have been fortunate enough to work with couples who constantly remind us of why we love what we do. We’ve also met some of the best vendors in the industry who are really the ones that make our jobs possible.

Has it been a smooth road?
We’ve seen so much personal and company growth since we started, but the biggest struggle we have faced has been finding work-life balance as our families have grown.

We are actually cousins through marriage (Melissa is married to Elsa’s cousin), so our families are extremely close. While we make it a priority to spend time with our families, we still wanted to provide our clients with the attention they deserved.

Now, with the little ones more independent and in school, we have found the balance we were seeking and look forward to the next challenge ahead.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the ME Weddings & Events story. Tell us more about the business.
One of the things that we are known for is always having two heads working together! We are so fortunate to have each other and really work well as a team. We always joke that we are two halves of a brain making the ultimate whole and definitely play on each other’s strengths.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next 5-10 years, we predict that like everything else, wedding planning will become more technology-based.

We can definitely see more innovative applications being utilized with shared drives, video conferencing and social media being such useful tools now.

We also predict a shift in spending trends as more late millennials reach the age of marriage. We’re interested to see where this generation will lead us with trends but have a hunch it will be full of surprises.
