Today we’d like to introduce you to Wayne Gurnick.
Wayne, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a Los Angeles native… yes, there are very few of us. I grew up surrounded by a community of creative people in the city with no boundaries. As a teenager, I worked for a florist who did the most outrageous work for the “who’s who” of Los Angeles. This experience fueled my own passion for creativity in design. Surprisingly, the start of my professional career took me in a different direction. After graduating with a business degree in marketing, I ended up working in human resources in the banking industry and eventually configuration management on the space shuttle program. Crazy, I know but all the time I was working toward my goal of opening a floral design studio. I did just that, which eventually led to expanding into full scale event planning, design and production at Moments By Wayne. All of these experiences seem to be so disjointed but they have really led me to the place that I am at today. Starting with the design in mind, I bring together all the facets that make a life cycle event or other celebration come to life. This often involves logistics, space planning, project management and so many other disciplines to create a complete experience for my clients and their guests.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing is ever a smooth road if you want to be successful. As an owner of a small company in Los Angeles, it is so important to be knowledgeable about everything. In addition to being an “expert”… (or what ever that is in your own field), you have to know about real estate and lease agreements, employment laws, finance, banking, technology, social media, and so many other aspects of running a business. It is so easy to get caught up in the running of a business that you can get lost in all this and not have the time or energy to do what you love in the first place. I managed to find the balance that allows me to still focus on what I love.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Moments By Wayne – what should we know?
Moments By Wayne is an event company. We plan, design and produce social events for both private and corporate clients in Los Angeles and around the world. This means weddings, mitzvahs, grand openings, product launches, non-profit fundraisers, holiday events, etc.
Most people that know me would say that I am a “Party Planner”. It is that and so much more. Here is the short list…
I am a compassionate friend and confidant, a psychologist, a parent (in a manner of speaking… ), a problem solver, a first responder to everything, and a concerned individual!!! A memory maker. A handy man to fix everything, a contractor to bring the right strategic partners to the client, a construction worker… Both figuratively and directly…
A baby sitter, a nanny, a housekeeper, an attorney, a chef, a bar tender, and someone that knows it all in a kind and humble way without any ego!!! Oh and a comedian and a shoulder to cry on. I can’t tell you how many times I have been told that I should have been a psychologist and I would be able to make so much more money!!!! Oh and a traffic cop too! I have been asked about private schools, real estate, health and fitness, dance, jewelry, fashion, child development and discipline and just about anything you can imagine!
The bottom line, I work with amazing clients that allow me to step into their lives and create moments that they and their guests will remember forever.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
There have been countless people who have influenced me in many ways throughout my life and I have always been thankful for their influence and support. During my career, I have been touched my many members of the American Institute of Floral Designers, photographers, designers, and clients who inform and inspire me on a regular basis. There is, however, ONE person that has provided the quiet and behind-the-scenes strength that everyone should have in their life.
Larisa, my wife of 32 years, has been by my side since our high school days. She gives me inspiration and support in everything I do and always encourages me to be better. She snaps me back when I veer off the road and is my voice of reason. She is a professional with her own career and so many people respect and look up to her. I am infinitely thankful to Larisa for her awareness, compassion, and inspiration, and the love we share every day.
