Meet Vivienne Vella of Soupure in West Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vivienne Vella.

Vivienne, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Soupure was a simple idea conceived during a lunch between myself and co-founder, Angela Blatteis when we both ordered a disappointing bowl of soups at a local restaurant. Both having had family members who took ill from cancer, we discussed the healing power of soups and we lamented over the challenge it has become to get TASTY, nutritious soups without cream or preservatives. Angela wanted something truly healthy for the on-the-go family, And, I was juicer and routinely felt starved, jittery and plagued by headaches (from calorie restriction and all that de-fibered sugar) after a juice cleanse. Angela and I are both busy moms of three and hard working professionals. Angela comes from the world of private equity and I come from the world of law. We both agreed we could do it better and that if consumers wanted a healthy meal in a to-go bottle, it should be in the form of soups! So, we set out to create Soupure – a company that is in the business of developing and delivering nutrient rich cold and hot soups, tonics and waters and soup cleanses that are all not only amazingly delicious but are also medically endorsed and made from GMO and preservative free, fiber and protein rich ingredients which actually feed, not starve your body.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. On the positive, we were overwhelmed with how quickly we took off and we were struggling to keep up with demand. We were amazed at how many parties latched on to our trademark “Souping is the new juicing” and started to go down the “souping” path. Now even juice companies that are now selling whole food based soups. What has been more challenging than we imagined was manufacturing a perishable product and finding the right copackers to scale with the product? We create our vegan soups from scratch, right down to the vegetable broth we make and sell separately and in our vegan soups. We refuse to use preservatives and to sacrifice the healthiest products for a very long shelf life. Finding artisan copackers that can maintain the integrity and quality and freshness and layered tastes combined with the 200+ nutrients we use in our soups and then scale, was by far the hardest challenge.

Soupure – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We sell 100 percent fresh, primarily organic, non-GMO, preservative and dairy free bone broths, soups, soup cleanses, and waters. We do not add cream or gluten to any of our products. What sets us apart in the “cleanse” category (primarily dominated by pressed juice cleanse companies) is that we don’t throw away the vital fiber matrix because by doing so we reduce most fruits to simple sugars that can leave your liver overworked and kidneys imbalanced (not to mention, not very “sustainably responsible”). Without the benefits of macro-nutrients, like protein and good fats, many of the vitamins and minerals featured in some juice combinations are simply rendered unusable. Also, certain whole vegetables need cooking to maximize or add the necessary dimension to their nutritional pathways. The body requires food in a variety of forms, raw and not raw, to feel optimally good. What sets us apart in the soup category is our freshest, non-GMO and preservative and dairy free products (at least as compared to most store and restaurant bought soups). What sets us apart from other fresh soup companies is our taste. Unlike most other companies, we make our soups in very small batches to keep that layered savory taste. And, we are one of the very few soup companies that extend the shelf life of its products without preservatives or extenders or high heat pasteurization through high-pressure processing.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I would say that was our part in creating “souping” as a new lifestyle category. Who knew “souping” would be “the new juicing?” We listened to our own bodies and considered our own lifestyles and I can proudly say we did! We also love hearing all the stories of improved health that our customers report. We have had customers say their feeling of constantly feeling bloated has vanished, their skin issues have been resolved, they have more energy, and/or their digestion has improved (not to mention their weight loss). We also loved having the opportunity to sing the praises of souping in our book, “THE SOUP CLEANSE” (published in 8 countries). Finally, we have loved the constant journey of learning about health and nutrition that this career has led us on.
