Meet zoë vickers of Vintagephiles in Leimert Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to zoë vickers.

zoë, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Born in the Midwest (between Columbus, Ohio & Chicago, Illinois), my childhood reflected mainly on art & style with my fondest memories including painting plus vintage & thrift shopping. On a typical Saturday, I would find myself venturing out to Sally’s (a colloquial term for the Salvation Army) to find hidden gems as it pertains to fashion, found objects, books, arts, shoes, records, etc. At this point, my love for style was born.

I am inspired by my granny, Rachel Lee Cox and the enchantment of constantly creating, educating, and refining myself in order to develop a style and aesthetic that is truly all of my own. When you add my mum (Raylonn), granny (Rachel Lee), Diana Ross, Josephine Baker, Donyale Luna, and even pulling back to the Queen Sheba and Nefertiti as inspiration, my style eclipses most. When one sees photos of my work or attends my events, you will see a strong interest in not only my style but the essence of my community now and within my coterie.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I always live from a place of abundance since it is our birthright. Nonetheless, challenges have ensued and even when they do, I always pivot to another plateau of elevation while learning. Being an entrepreneur since the age of ten and half years young, my first lesson in pivoting laid the foundation for the woman I am today. I was selected as one of four gifted pre-teens and young adults to handle almost $1M worth of property for the Ohio Department of MRDD. We received a lot of “you’re too young” to “what do you kids know about property management” to flat out “No” from many in Columbus. As the youngest member of the group, it felt normal that we keep pushing towards the “Yes”. In the long run, the adults over the program felt the program was “too rich” for the effort us blossoming kiddos were still willing to take.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
As a freelance creative, I have cultivated extensive experience in vintage fashion styling, visual campaign management, art direction, brand image development, style archival services & event styling. My work has been featured in publication titans such as WWD to ELLE to CRWN Magazine to Lucky to InStyle. The client roster of Zoë Vickers includes Opening Ceremony, Samuel L Jackson, The Cool Kids, Vera Wang, Band of Outsiders, Wiz Khalifa, Essie Canada, Michael Bastian, HBO, Sophie Theallet, Harlem’s Fashion Row and Yigal Azrouel.

Currently, I am focused more on my collective, vintagephiles©️. In order to be a vintagephile (vpH), one must “denote fondness & flawlessly execute all things vintage”. This multidisciplinary platform is being polished further to be able to share these stories globally. vPh provides the opportunity to collaborate and provide an outlet for vintage curators, particularly people of colour, a way to cultivate culture & share the true definition of curated nostalgia™

During the current global pandemic, I launched a talked series entitled “the curated nostalgia™” with co-host & fellow vintagephile/best friend, Chante Nakapaahu. We have welcomed guests like tech entrepreneur phenom Dawn Dickson of PopCom, beauty maven Paula Kennedy (wife of NFL Superbowl Champ Jimmy Kennedy), hip hop legend Chuck Inglish and even added a guest co-host; my fiancé, Tahrim Kahlis! The topics we cover range from wealth building in our community to being a lightworker for one’s own state of wellness to the global political arena to unpacking the art of Beyonce’s Black is King.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
“I am half blade, half silk and no one ever sees me coming.”
