Meet Vincent Grigsby of SMASH Football Training in Paramount

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vincent Grigsby.

Vincent, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
During the 2016 football season, I was coaching the offensive line at El Camino College (Torrance). During the process of watching recruit highlight film, I noticed that many kids had poor technique – blocking with their head, playing too tall, among other false steps. Effective offensive line play is rooted in the mastery of unnatural movements. So, in December 2016, I began to hold workouts specifically tailored for offensive linemen. In 2017, I was named best JuCo (Junior College) OL coach in California ( During the beginning of 2020, before COVID-19 quarantine rules took effect, I held regular weekend workouts for offensive linemen and tight ends at Warren High School in Downey, CA. SMASH also holds annual coaching clinics.

In 2019, our coach clinic at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Torrance, CA featured the likes of John Beam (Head Coach of Laney College football. Featured in the latest season of Last Chance U on Netflix), Aron Gideon (Head Coach of Taft HS), and Jericho Silvernail (Defensive Line Coach at Long Beach Community College). Our 2020 clinic was canceled, but it would have featured another Last Chance U alum, Kiyoshi Harris, Head Coach of Independence College. My goal for SMASH is to continue to educate offensive linemen and coaches about ways to do their job safer, smarter, and dominant.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like any business, finding the right clientele is a crucial element of success. I did not have many connections with high school and youth coaches. Most of my workouts were marketed via Facebook and Instagram. These campaigns weren’t very effective, but I began to embrace the small group atmosphere. It allows me to personalize my workouts and focus on the individual needs of the player, as opposed to a big blanket of workouts that don’t address the athletes personal needs.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
SMASH Football Training is known for teaching fundamental skills for playing offensive line. Our website headline is “Teaching Fundamentals, Achieving Dominance.” We focus on the little movements that, if perfected, make up big improvements. SMASH is an acronym:

You will compete as if you and your teammates are a well-oiled machine…perfectly bound to the task at hand.

You will not commit stupid penalties. No hitting after the play. No type of extracurricular activity that would harm your victory.

Although you never wish harm on your opponent, you will play with destructive intentions.

You know your job, and you know how to get it done. Go to work like you own the place.

If losing, you will not give up. If winning, you will not let up. Heart is the most important element of SMASH.

SMASH exercises the body as well as the mind. It’s more than just competition. It’s more than just drills. We teach kids to perfect their actions, impose their will, overcome adversity, and consistently do your job with team victory in mind. This is what makes SMASH the top choice for many Los Angeles area offensive linemen.

What were you like growing up?
My earliest memories include me striving to be a pilot. I always found aviation interesting. As a result, many of my interests revolved around science and technology- I loved playing with microscopes, building things with Lego’s and K’Nex, and watching the science channel. But, I wasn’t a complete nerd. Many of my friends considered me trustworthy and funny. I always had a smile on my face and I was easy to get along with. My upbringing revolved around family time. Spending time with my grandparents was a regular weekend activity. My parents instilled a strong sense of togetherness and ambition…two qualities that I exercise daily with my family and professional life.
