Meet Viktoriya Mincheva of Green Activities in Mid-City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Viktoriya Mincheva.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Viktoriya. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My story begins with art. Creating art was something that I enjoyed doing since I was a little girl. Art gave me confidence in my abilities and freedom to express my feelings and ideas. This freedom to create from my imagination was very captivating and inspire me to become the person that I am today. On my journey as an artist, I wanted to share not only my art but also the experience of creating something born from my own ideas. So, I decided to become a teacher dedicated to providing creative opportunities for young children.

I went to school and graduated with a B.A. in Child Development and currently pursuing an M.A. in Arts Education from Boston University. In order to build experience in the field of education, I worked at several educational institutions located in Los Angeles including Playgroup Preschool. Being part of the Play Group Preschool’ education team gave me an opportunity to work with very loving teachers, meet incredible children and parents. Also, I had the pleasure of meeting the very talented gymnastic coach Danielle Baker of DaniBees Activities and music instructor Max Tepper of Music with Max Los Angeles.

Parallel to getting experience as a preschool teacher, I have also started my own recycled art workshops for children that were held during community events in Los Angeles and Long Beach. On my journey as an educator, I have discovered that children gravitate towards materials found in their environment and when encouraged they begin to use these materials to create from their imagination. I observed how children were expressing their ideas through art and exploring other learning subjects when engaged in creative learning. My passion for art and repurposing materials inspire me to write and publish two children’s books on the subject of recycling, repurposing and creating art. The books are called “ The Flower Hut” and “Journey to Button Land”.

In addition to that, I have published a creative guide for educators and parents called “Inspiring Creativity in Children’s Everyday Explorations”(Learn how to inspire creative learning using materials from our environment). The role of the guide is to motivate and inspire children to be creative. Children will be able to explore, practice and build on various skills and learning subjects. Part I of the guide describes how the journey of repurposing materials started in my classroom. Part II of the guide consists of ten engaging activities that can be created at home and school. Educators and parents can use this guide as a tool to help children establish a connection to nature and learn about sustainability.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I started Green Activities back in March 2019. In the process, I have discovered that opening a business is a never-ending learning experience. The biggest challenge for me was to embrace the fact that by opening my own business I am taking a risk and must accept the outcomes no matter what they might be. However, I also knew that if I did not take a risk of trying I would regret it for the rest of my life. Green Activities was born from my passion to create environmental education classes that will serve all the children in our communities. Providing green activities to schools allows me to bring the learning experience to every child.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Green Activities story. Tell us more about the business.
Green Activities provides environmental education classes to schools through mobile service. The classes offered by Green Activities are recycled art, gardening, and plant-based juicing class. I offer these classes as part of Preschools and Elementary school’s enrichment and after-school programs. As well as providing private lessons, workshops for teachers and upcycled art birthday parties for kids. I believe that environmental education classes are an essential influence on the way children will view and respond to their environment. Green Activities classes are uniquely designed to help children develop empathy and care for all living things. These classes teach children how to grow their own food, how to preserve the environment, how to make healthy nutrition choices, as well as motivating them to become independent creative thinkers. Engaging in green activities gives children an opportunity to build a positive image of themselves and a chance to leave a positive environmental footprint on planet earth.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Finding something that I am passionate about has played a significant role in my professional and personal life. I am lucky to have discovered that creating makes me happy. Having a passion for creating art and teaching has changed the way I see myself and the world around me. I began to see myself as someone capable and the world as a place full of possibilities.
