Meet Viktoriya Kernes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Viktoriya Kernes.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
After getting my MBA and working for Fortune 500 companies for the past 8 years as technology operations manager, I’ve decided to become a small business owner. Early in 2016 I discovered that working with clay can be an immersive and a meditative experience. Clay, much like art therapy, provides an expressive outlet, through slow and mindful clay practice. I fell in love with the art of ceramics and the idea behind Simple Things Ceramics studio was born. My approach to ceramics is unlike anything else out there. It’s a fun, relaxing, and deeply purposeful experience. By engaging the mind and the hands the brain relaxes and stays in the moment.

Simple Things Ceramics embraces the wellness model that has been successfully used in Yoga, Meditation and Spinning, and applies it to clay workshops. We give each customer a truly unique way to unwind, reset, connect and create. Simple Things Ceramics is an online/ local pop up store and a mobile studio space in West LA offering clay workshops, immersive team experiences, art classes and community events. At Simple Things Ceramics, we go beyond the “paint-your-own” pottery shops that use prefabricated designs. My goal is to create a unique world of artistic expression for all guests. Ceramics is the new Zen, and this movement is just getting started!

Please tell us about your art.
Clay is magic.

Simple Things Ceramics products are made by hand in a little home pottery studio in sunny Los Angeles, California. The belief that is at the core of my philosophy is that it’s the simple things in life that make us happy! All perfectly imperfect pieces are uniquely crafted in small batches to have a big personality and a touch of magic. I am Viktoriya, the artist behind the brand, personally adding my signature #V to each handmade piece. I love working with a minimal pastel color palette. My work is inspired by deep blue ocean, luscious blooms, and dreamy clouds. The mission of the brand is to infuse everyday life with organic, cheerful and lighthearted experiences though functional ceramics. I hope and dream to illuminate homes all over the world through sharing and creating art with you.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Starting and running a creative business and being a creative in general is a roller-coaster, which is both trilling and scary all at once. I think brand partnerships are the best thing I have done in my business. I love working with local small businesses. The stories behind our partner brands have been a source of inspiration to me.
