Today we’d like to introduce you to Victor Migalchan.
Victor, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started writing the story which is the foundation of the TV Series “My American Family” in December 2017. From super warm and comfortable LA I went to North China: Beijing, Shenyang, Harbin to teach masterclasses and meet students; participate in governmental events I was invited to. While sitting in Hotel and enjoying the view of the Siberian winter from my window I got the inspiration. “My American Family” is a story based on my own life experience. It is about the European guy who got influenced by Chinese culture and pursues his American Dream. Through different obstacles, he makes it to the US from China and is hosted by an American – Mexican family. Here the new journey begins.
My goal is to portray different cultures in their authentic way, with their real customs, music, features and traditions and their correlation. There are so many tv shows which show cultures in a very Americanized way. I wanted to be different. Another goal of mine was to reach to the audience and present my thoughts and values such as family, friendship, loyalty, real strong characters. There also is an emphasis on authentic Chinese martial arts and philosophy. China and Chinese culture had a great influence on me, my personal and professional development. I was blessed to learn from the world’s best masters and honored to share my knowledge around the world.
It is my pleasure to work with the professional team to put this story on another level, to make it interesting to watch on TV so that millions of viewers could feel it and relate to it.
My American Family is a single-camera comedy with dramatic elements. This TV show follows an ensemble protagonist living under one roof in the Mexican – American Martinez household.
Coming to America to fulfill the ‘American Dreams’ is not easy. Alexander Ramonovich, or Alex, a European native, born and raised in a rich military family, with an exposure to the Chinese culture, comes to the U.S. to pursue his dreams. Having lived in China for many years, he arrives in the U.S. and finds himself experiencing different cultural surprises in the new country. In the beginning, his homestay family is not making things easier for him. However, as they get to know Alex, their relations start to change.
Alex and Miguel (the father) develop very special bonding and become true friends. Alex experiences a romantic story with Heather. Phoebe, Miguel’s daughter faces life confusions, tries to find herself and realizes that she is gay. Alex is present and assists each one of characters to achieve their own dreams and faces serious life challenges.
Has it been a smooth road?
Creation of the story and development was not simple.
There are so many stages to go through. First of all, it is the story, then – the script.
Later on, we have to prepare the bible and other presentation materials for pitching.
When we have everything ready we move to the next stage – meeting investors.
After we have investment we go into pre-production, then production and post.
Getting right people, the true team is the most challenging and the most important.
It was not easy for me either. Success depends on correct and in time decisions, which sometimes might be pretty tough. However, when you have right people and everyone is on the same page – project develops very well. Being director and producer on the set you deal not only with the project management and creative part but also with people. In order to move on and make this project successful, I had to say goodbye to one crew and hire a new team just few days before the actual shoot.
Luckily the core members of the team were with me: DP Hugo Will, Film Editor Andrew Korotun, Line Producer Irene Kay, actor Steve Jacques who is our leading actor but took also many responsibilities such as organization of rehearsals and arrangements; producer Vivi Lin and screenplay writer Sam Morris. Our actors did amazing job, Magi Avila kept amazing mood on the set and Marilyn Flores demonstrated great ethics and was so genuine. Hugo Will and Andrew Korotun supervised technical details of production; Irene Kay did wonderful organizational work on the set; Steve did beautiful work in organizing rehearsals and communication with actors; Our mane makeup artist Gina Faucher was one the best team players helping not only with makeup (which she does the best in Hollywood) but also with organization, communications and support on the set. Vivi Lin did supervision of the scriptwriting process. Each member did great job, they were not only professionals on the set but also real friends, knowing how and when to support and help, even if it wasn’t their direct responsibility. They took this project as their own (with no “employee” mind set) and it was a blessing.
Hard work pays off. The feature film which I did in 2016-2017 had finally its premiere in North Hollywood few weeks ago, the short film “View from Below” which I made in 2017 – 2018 got multiple awards on international film festivals and currently is broadcasted on amazon prime. Step by step things move on forward. We just need patience, hard work and faith.
Please tell us more about your work.
Our company specializes in high-quality content production, innovative and unique storytelling and visualization. I could unite world best specialists in storytelling, cinematographers, editors, VFX specialists, and international marketing experts.
We have wonderful and professional advisers who are leading us using their experience on one hand and taking into account professional expertise of the team members on another. The key of our company’s success is the international team, which means international market experiences as well.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I love Los Angeles county, love LA, love its rhythm and varieties. There are lots of locations and places to do business. The main point is not the location, it’s in your idea. In LA and in California we have the most beautiful locations: we have the ocean, hills, urban territory and business districts.
Locations here themselves serve as celebrities: Hollywood Hills, Santa Monica, DTLA, Beverly Hills – you might not have a celebrity in your masterpiece but if you have these famous locations – it presents a certain level. LA / Hollywood is the heart of entertainment and movie business, definitely, its the best option to start here but event if you can’t (for whatever reason) – start where you can, create stories, film, create your portfolio, participate in film/tv festivals, build your name and brand.
