Today we’d like to introduce you to Vicky Lin.
Hi Vicky, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my creative journey as a student when I ArtCenter in 2019. I came in school as an illustration major with little idea of what I wanted to pursue career-wise. I explored different styles and mediums during my first year at school and halfway through my second year in college I found my passion for motion and graphic design.
A lot of my growth came from the community built around me during my education. I was able to learn from professors, peers, alumni, and gain insight from professionals in the industry. After finding the path I was most interested in pursuing, I focused solely on improving and building my skills as a motion designer. I had the opportunity to experience two internships after 2 1/2 years in ArtCenter. These internships gave me great insight on the professional world and play a huge factor to where I am today. I am currently in my final semester at ArtCenter and still learning and growing on the way.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My creative development has not been a smooth. Like many other creative designers, I faced personal crisis and mental blocks. I wasn’t confident in the beginning, I lacked a lot of confidence and my grades in my first and second semesters destroyed my ego. I was quick to find what I didn’t like doing.
However, trust in the process led me to where I am today. I definitely struggled while picking up new programs and developing a motion mindset. There were definitely classes where I found myself staying up frequently in order to solve technical and concept problems. It took a few semesters for me to find my creative voice and an efficient working process.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am attending ArtCenter College of Design and I major in Illustration motion design. I am a motion designer with emphasis on branding and identity systems.
I began as an illustrator so I naturally have an illustration style I lean towards however, as a creative soon-to-enter the industry and pursue careers, I would like to focus on motion in branding. I enjoy designing graphical and visual elements, storytelling, and bringing my creations to life.
I am most proud of my ability to ideate and generate new explorations based off of my own perspective and storytelling. I love both illustrating and designing and constantly exploring different ways to create art that evoke emotion and impact.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I am also someone who is just starting out. I have a few experiences gained from previous internships however I have not been a full-time employee so I am also getting ready to embark my journey as a professional in the field.
