Meet Viandka Carrillo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Viandka Carrillo.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It all started when I was little, back in Colombia my beautiful country. I’ve always been surrounded by artists in my family but my father (the only businessman of the family) wanted me to follow his footsteps so I kept my love for acting a secret for a long while, I even said I wanted to be a neonatal nurse. He had a whole plan for me, I’m the oldest sibling out of 6, he wanted the best for me since he didn’t have the same opportunities when he was little. During my last high school year, I knew it was time to be honest about my dream and my dad was surprisingly supportive, I think a part of him thought it was just a whim of mine. I auditioned for a BFA in Acting for film at the New York Film Academy of Los Angeles and I was accepted! I took six months to truly prepare, I took 2 Acting classes, one were personalized classes with a Colombian actress. I also even took cooking classes to be ready for the adult life in LA. I started on February of 2016 and it felt right, I knew I made the right decision.

That year I got the opportunity of acting in a Colombian movie called Operación Piroberta and what an experience! Those three years of college taught me so much, not just about acting but also about life, it is hard to start a new life all by yourself at such a young age in a new country! Family and friends are everything, I won’t stop trying to accomplish my dream because I want to make them proud. I’m now a graduate from college, I graduated September 2018. My thesis showed me that if I put my mind into something I can make it happen, it wasn’t easy at all but I did it, with the help of amazing friends, and I’m proud of the result. I’m on my OPT about to apply for my visa, this little time I’ve had working in LA has showed me how much I want to stay and how in love I am with acting. I got to meet Ariana Grande who I admire, I even appeared in one of her music videos, how crazy is that! Also worked with Juan Pablo Zurita who is the sweetest guy, hardworking and proudly Latino! I’ve experienced so much and learned something different from each, can’t wait to see where this journey takes me.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There has been a few. At first it was my family’s approval, they were all shocked I was going against my father’s plan. This plan was something everybody knew about and what everyone expected. My dad is someone very respected since he was able to create a career for himself coming from the poorest side of Cúcuta, a city in Colombia. Another problem I faced was during my first two years here, I lost a family member and going through that by myself really affected me and I lost a few friends. Then my family was having money problems that could’ve led to me going back to Colombia, I wasn’t able to go home for Christmas that year, it wasn’t easy. Now my struggle is the whole visa process, it’s a lot of money and a lot of requirements that I’m hoping I can achieve. Gladly I’ve found my “family” in LA, a group of friends that I know are going to help me in every step of the way.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m an actress but I also dance and sing. I started dancing when I was 5, I’ve done ballet but didn’t love it, then contemporary, Latin, hip hop and even was a cheerleader for long time. I’ve been singing since I can remember. I’ve always been a daydreamer and that has helped a lot with my acting. I create all kinds of situations in my head and also I tend to randomly start acting scenes when I’m alone. I have a very expressive face that in my day to day life tends to get me in trouble haha but for acting it has helped a lot, works for comedy and drama. I love dramatic comedies, I like to add comedy intense situations, give the scenes up and downs, keep the audience entertained. I think it’s fun to challenge myself with every character, see where I can take it, get to know it really well that, I’m a way, we kind of become friends.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
My goal is to be on the screen, get to be tons of different characters, be very flexible with my acting, love what I do! I want to keep learning and better my skills. I’d love to be on a tv show, those that people can binge watch, I want to be a character that people connect with and want to keep getting to know.
