Meet Veta Handy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Veta Handy.

Hi Veta, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Our journey started about ten years ago as only idea. I knew I wanted to open a women’s boutique with my daughter, but we didn’t know where to start. We saved money for inventory and kept telling ourselves that it wasn’t the right time. Three years ago, I was skipped over for a promotion and my daughter Nicole had just given birth to her second child and no longer wanted to work full-time. In that moment, we decided to take the leap of faith and just do it and that’s what we did. We came up with the name eNVious Threads, which is both our names combined the N is for Nicole and the V is for Veta. We didn’t have a model and with no modeling experience Nicole decided to model and in the beginning, our pictures were horrible, but with time she got better and I learned to direct and visual merchandise. We also needed a photographer, but with our business being very new, it just wasn’t practical to pay a photographer when we weren’t seeing the numbers that we wanted yet. With an iPhone and my ten years old (at the time) granddaughter’s great eye she became our photographer and still is. Our mother-daughter business turned into a mother-daughter- granddaughter business within six months. From the beginning, finding our footing and finding our customers was a challenge because you can’t just buy everything that you like. We started that way it just didn’t work, our style was all over the place. I’m a hippie at heart and Nicole has more of an edgy-chic style. With time, we learned that our customer likes to remain classy with a little edge and that’s what we try to gravitate towards while keeping up with trends and maintaining affordable prices.

Once we figured out our customer and what we were each good at it seemed like everything started to fall into place. There is and will always be ups and down but, with consistency, passion, and pushing each other to remain motivated there is no telling where we can go.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This road hasn’t been smooth, but I wouldn’t consider it a struggle either. If there was a word in the middle for Grey that is what we’d call it. We both knew it wouldn’t be easy and we also would not be an overnight success, the journey that we were embarking on would require we work hard for our business along with working our full-time jobs. One of our biggest struggles was getting people to trust eNVious Threads, to trust our brand, which could only be accomplished through consistency and amazing customer service. In a world full of online retailers, many with horrible reviews of not responding to questions or emails and customers receiving incorrect items or nothing at all, we made it our mission to set ourselves apart from those online retailer stigmas. We made it a point to answer emails and questions daily, ship out orders in a timely manner (typically the next day), and make sure that we are providing quality products. Although there are thousands of wholesale websites that are accessible to purchase inventory, we take full advantage of being a Los Angeles based boutique. All of our shopping is done in the Los Angeles Garnet District. Every item in our inventory is handpicked and the fabrics are physically touched by myself to make sure that we provide nothing short of quality products. Fighting the stigma of being a small online retailer will always be there, but with the tools we have implemented, we will always overcome it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The one thing that we are most proud of that sets us apart from everyone else is our customer service. Without customers, we don’t have a business, therefore taking care of our customers and making sure that each and every one of them feels valued and like they are never being taken advantage of is our priority.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Currently, we both enjoy listening to Sarah Jakes Roberts podcast “Woman Evolve” and tuning in to some of her YouTube videos. We believe that in business and life in general, you need to have a strong foundation, ours is faith in God. Listening to these podcasts and videos help us see things clearer and give us inspiration to keep pushing forward.
