Meet Venice Makeup Artist: Jenny Karl

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Karl.

Jenny, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Well, in a nutshell, I am a Venice Beach-based makeup artist, specializing in Airbrush Foundation, Beauty, HD for Print, Film & Television, Fashion, Special Event, Men’s Grooming, Ethnic Makeup, and Hair Styling:)

I was born and raised in Jersey, where I started my career as a teenager (17) working at a makeup studio in our local mall, while in college studying for my Bachelor’s degree in Law & Justice (I know—nuts!!!)

After graduation, I continued to pursue a career in the beauty industry (because it was way more fun than the criminal justice field) working for MAC cosmetics, while also freelancing in Manhattan and Philly. And after an almost 10-year career on the east coast, I moved west to continue to pursue a freelance career as a makeup artist in sunny Los Angeles, CA!

Now, after well over a decade in the industry(eek–I’ve just aged myself,) I suppose I am considered an expert in my field, writing for the health and beauty sections of numerous publications and blogs, as well as hosting a makeup how-to series for Ehow.com.

I also specialize in artist training and have recently been wearing a co-producer hat, joining forces with writer, David Barry, to bring to life award-winning YouTube series, Tinsel’s Town!

And if that’s not enough for ya, this workaholic also houses a small team of skilled artists at/in my LA based hair and makeup agency.

Has it been a smooth road?
This business is a hustle! I am lucky to have amazingly loyal clients because in LA you can be replaced by the next new Instagram artist at any moment. You have to have a thick skin because LA can definitely chew you up and spit you out in the middle of Hollywood Blvd. once in a while! You just gotta dust yourself off, put on some lipgloss, and get back into the hustle;)

What’s your outlook for the industry over the next 5-10 years?
Being in the industry for over a decade now, I’ve already seen a huge shift to HD which is when I taught myself how to airbrush and that has been life changing honestly—it saves me time and energy touching up and it looks amazing on camera and it saves time in post as well! That little machine is amazing! But hopefully, in the future, all human artists will not become defunct and replaced with airbrushing expert robots!

What has been the primary challenge you’ve faced?
Lately, it’s been keeping up with the Instagram artists… This whole craze of social media is definitely interesting! I started doing makeup before there was any social media, we had basic Internet services through AOL.com up until some years ago when the iPhone came out and then apps were huge and now social media etc. and so it is difficult when I’m up for a job against another artist that may not be as qualified as me but has 10,000 more followers — that always kind of freaks me out!

Let’s change gears – is there any advice you’d like to give?
I have lots of advice but the first thing that comes to mind is work ethic… It’s not always how artistically talented you are that gets you a loyal client but your work ethic…as well as respect for the team that you’re working with and knowing that you’re not the diva on set… We are in the service industry and although our job is one of the most important, we are part of a team! As they say, it takes a village!
