Meet Venice Hairstylist: Tali Aurelio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tali Aurelio.

Tali is a talented hairstylist based in Venice.  She is hard working, ambitious and incredibly skilled – we’re proud to have her as part of the LA community. Below, you’ll find edited excerpts of our interview with her.

Can you walk us through your story and how you got to where you are today?

The story is funny actually. I started coming to Sit Still hair salon 6 years ago or more to get my hair colored. I knew I wanted to be in the industry since I was a kid but never really knew what it took. I used to color many of my friends hair at home and they would love it. While I was getting my hair done one day at Sit Still, I showed one of the stylists some pictures of hair I colored and she told me I was talented and I need to go to beauty school. Soon after I started hair school and was working at Sephora too. Right when I started school I knew it was for me. After I finished school I went right back to Sit Still Salon to see if there was a job opening and sure enough, here I am today coloring the stylists hair that used to color mine. I love what I do and have such a passion for the creativity in hair styling.

Really great to see how your story came full circle!  So, what’s been the roughest part of your career so far?

The hardest part of my life was when I changed my career path years ago. I used to bartend/serve at night but I knew I had to make a change. I wanted a real career doing something I love. One day I quit my job with no plan. I quickly had no money, no job, and was soon to be kicked out of my apartment. I was applying anywhere I could that was beauty related. Mac, Sephora, ulta, etc. I was kicked out of my apartment and broke staying w friends. I would sometimes do my friends hair for money to eat.I felt like it was hopeless but I kept thinking that it would be worth it. One day I received a call from Sephora saying I got the job. I was beyond excited! All those applications and running around to different places for a job had finally paid off. It was finally a job opportunity related to the field I wanted to be in.

Wow, glad you were able to fight through the challenges and reach your dreams.  What are the milestones you’ve been most excited about?

A huge milestone for me was getting the job of my dreams in Venice beach. Not many people can choose where they want to work after hair school. I think being hungry and motivated is important. I went to Sit Still salon immediately after finishing school and was persistent to have a job there. I started out assisting the owner and soon became a stylist with a chair. Being in this business you have to go out and get what you want. I’m sure it’s not easy for everyone but I believe that motivation is key.

The day I realized my career was working out exactly how I wanted was not long ago. I was coloring hair at sit still one day and I was fully booked. At the same time clients were calling in on the phone for me and emailing me to get their hair done. I was busier than most stylists there. I felt like I was in a dream. This was what I had always wanted.

Excellent, congratulations on all the success.  Any plans for the future?

My plans for the future are hopefully to own my own salon one day in Los Angeles. I would also love to teach classes on hair color techniques. I want to inspire people and share my knowledge at the same time.
