Meet Vehans Ayvazi of LA Select Basketball in Burbank and Glendale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vehans Ayvazi.

Vehans, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After high school basketball, I wanted to remain close to the game as I continued my academics. I began coaching in recreations leagues and I met a group of kids that were extremely passionate about the game and this motivated me to get them together to form an AAU team. After some success, more and more players wanted to be a part of LA Select so we grew into what we are today.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There’s been a lot of bumps along the way. We’ve had losing seasons and winning seasons but we’ve always kept our focus on the key goal of our program which is to develop players.

LA Select Basketball – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Established in November 2011, LA Select Basketball is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We are a year-round AAU affiliated basketball club that competes in tournaments and leagues all over the West Coast.

At LA Select, we focus on the development of players at a young age by teaching the fundamentals and preaching good sportsmanship. We feature a family friendly environment for kids to grow and understand the game of basketball. Players and parents are expected to be very committed. We feature a rigorous schedule that can include 2-4 practices per week.

Due to our belief in the importance of education, players are expected to meet academic goals in order to qualify to participate.

Our coaching staff here at LA Select is dedicated to fulfilling the following expectations:
– Building an environment of trust and respect amongst each other.
– Demanding excellence from both players and coaches.
– Providing an environment where education comes first.
– Promoting pride and confidence within players.
– Teaching players to value good sportsmanship.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me is when I see a player develop. Wins come and go… Trophies come and go… but having a positive effect on a kids life is priceless. That’s what makes this job so rewarding.
