Today we’d like to introduce you to Lena and Siroon.
Lena and Siroon met and immediately bonded in Armenia in 2012, and stayed in touch over the years. With Lena’s background as a writer and recipe creator, and Siroon’s as a photographer and creative designer, the concept of Vegan Armenian Kitchen, the cookbook, arose while they caught up in Los Angeles in 2018. While they work long-distance, a commitment to working online together as well as occasional trips between their respective cities keeps their project on track and moving forward!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While it has been a generally smooth road and we are thankful for that, working long-distance of course carries its fair share of challenges, especially considering we are collaborating on a cookbook! But we make it work–through constant communication on every platform imaginable!
Please tell us about Vegan Armenian Kitchen (Cookbook).
Vegan Armenian Kitchen is a cookbook that highlights the authentic plant-based cuisine of Armenia and the diaspora, and also includes some veganized classics. Lena is the recipe creator and writer behind the project, and Siroon is the photographer and creative designer. We are proud of our commitment to bringing awareness to the wide variety of Armenian foods available that are naturally free of animal products, as well as the history, stories, and folklore behind them. With a general shift towards plant-based eating on the rise, we are excited to bring some much-needed diversity to the vegan food scene!
We are also happy to be donating a portion of the proceeds of every cookbook sold to Centaur Animal-Assisted Therapy & Rescue Center, an NGO located in Armenia!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Definitely creativity and curiosity! We want to present everything in this cookbook–the recipes, stories, photos, and overall design–in the most creative and intriguing way possible for our readers. Curiosity also plays a huge role, as there is so much history behind Armenian cuisine and food traditions, and having a deep-rooted interest in doing the research makes all the difference!
