Meet Vanessa Perez of War Paint Aesthetics in Simi Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Perez.

Vanessa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was raised around the beauty industry with my mother being a manicurist and always looked at the estheticians with their beautiful skin and lab coats walking around with complete admiration.

In college, I was an art student and unsure of where my education would lead. All I knew was that I didn’t want to be delivering pizza and working retail forever. Not that there is anything wrong with either of those jobs! I just needed to honor the creative side of myself.

In 2003, I enrolled in night classes at Newberry School of Beauty while working two jobs and graduated within six months.

For five years, I had the privilege of working with a phenomenal group of talent in Westlake Village at The Hair Grove Salon and continued my education with various makeup, skincare and waxing technique classes. I felt that I needed and wanted different experiences in my career and decided to work at a medical spa for a couple of years. Continuing my education with different services, training staff, and helping run the facility, I grew to realize I wanted to run my own business. At this time in Westlake Village there wasn’t an ability to work in a salon/spa and be independent. Everyone wanted you to work for them and to make a small commission off of your services.

I moved myself to Simi Valley and landed a job at Coldwater Creek Spa, where I was able to learn how to utilize my time and continue my knowledge of different products and further my education in various techniques.

After a few years there, I started to finally begin MY business. I began renting a space at Bella A’More Day Spa & Salon and grew to establish myself. It was scary, exciting and absolutely worth the blood sweat and tears going into it! I continue to broaden my service menu and expand my knowledge constantly. This business is never boring and it’s my passion!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Well, let me tell you, there will always be struggles and bumps in the road. In 2008, four years into jumping into the beauty industry the economy took a turn and the housing market crashed. Our businesses took a serious hit and everything slowed down significantly. It was super rough navigating through it all but, as most in this industry do, we persevered and continued onward!

Around 2014 Bella A’More Day Spa & Salon had a failed business partnership. All of the booth renters got phone calls that we had a few hours to pack up our livelihoods and vacate the premises. It was awful! So much uncertainty and our aspirations felt obliterated. As frightening & unsettling as that was, I was able to find a new space and had myself up and running within 24 hours.

There is always joy in finding yourself in tough spots and finding a way to dig yourself out. That is where creativity and a willingness to survive come to play. It’s never easy, but it’s always worth it.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with War Paint Aesthetics – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
War Paint Aesthetics is a business founded on the belief that women & men deserve to feel their best. The services my business offers are to help others feel confident, educate guests in proper skincare, and build the community up.
I think I am known for being a bit of a perfectionist and eyebrows are and will always be a specialty. Microblading is quickly becoming a popular service, giving individuals the gift of beautiful, natural-looking eyebrows. And I’m absolutely loving having the opportunity to be able to give people their brows back.

No nonsense, sound skincare advice for all ages and walks of life also gives me great satisfaction. I like to include a myriad of modalities to be able to offer the most advanced & customized treatments possible with the highest standards for guests. Giving them the outcomes they desire and the ability to maintain those results with a newfound education and proper skincare.

Airbrush makeup applications for photoshoots, weddings and other events are also something I enjoy doing. Makeup can be fun and showing guests how to bring their best features forward or enhance their natural beauty is always a wonderful moment.

I pride myself in my high standards and my never-ending desire for more knowledge. This side of the beauty industry is always evolving and continues to grow with more and more information constantly becoming available.

What sets me apart from others is my nonconformist attitude with longevity in the industry, experiences, knowledge, ability to adapt and being a hard worker. It is reflected in my ability to retain clients and they reward me with referrals of their loved ones, friends, and colleagues.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Becoming an educator and giving back to the industry which has given me so much is definitely something I would love to see in the future. I really enjoy helping new estheticians learn and grow while instilling the confidence and added knowledge they deserve.

I am also looking forward to adding other permanent cosmetic services to my repertoire. Such as tattoo removal, blush lips, powder brows, etc.
