Meet Valley Village Photographer: Jonathan Roberts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Roberts.

Jonathan Roberts is an LA based fashion photographer and one of the production managers of Style Fashion Week Los Angeles. Photography has been a true passion of his for over 10 years, but he has made his mark in the Fashion industry in the last two years. He started with wedding and engagement photography but found his main interests lead him to fashion photography and his passion now lies in editorial and runway photography. He is a published photographer whose work can be clearly recognized simply because he finds a way to tell a story and expose the natural beauty and raw emotion of the subject, designer, and creative team. He evokes empathy, passion, and thought through these images. He reveals a more candid view of life in Fashion and is drawn to imperfection, as it is the one thing that makes us individually unique, vulnerable, and beautifully perfect. His runway photography has been featured in multiple publications such as Brigade LA, Apparel News, Regard, San Francisco Chronicle,Ellements Magazine, Elagant, Nakid Magazine as well as others.

He began working with multiple agencies in LA shooting their new faces and quickly built a reputation as a reliable and professional photographer.

Has it been a smooth road?
Not at all, so much trial and error and getting burned by helping others.

What is the most difficult part of what you do?
I think the hardest part is not getting discouraged. The market is flooded with Instagram photographers, fresh talent, and people that don’t want to pay what your worth. You have to continually adapt and change with trends and how you are marketing yourself. I am great at marketing others but when it comes to myself it’s hard.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For me, it would be being able to pay the bills by just photography alone. More importantly, I’d love to shoot for a new stand magazine; Vouge, W, Harpers. It’s such a hard question to answer because as a photographer you want to have your work recognized and your name known but at the same time, you just want to be able to pay the bills and feed your family. haha

So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
Currently, I am planning my wedding to the Love of My Life! But in photography, I am working on updating the commercial side my book and shooting more lookbooks for designers. I am also getting back into wedding photography and architectural. My weddings tend to be more of a photojournalistic approach capturing the candid and once in a lifetime moments rather than the posed shots.
