Meet Valerie Hirsch and Marta Fernandez of Voyager in Arts District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Valerie Hirsch and Marta Fernandez.

Valerie and Marta, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We met in San Francisco, where we currently have two other stores. Our collective experience includes buying, styling, and designing, so we feel really equipped as a team.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We’ve had our share of obstacles, just like anyone else would, but we welcome them as learning experiences. We really love what we do, so dealing with difficulties along the way becomes part of our growing process.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Voyager story. Tell us more about the business.
We focus on stocking our stores with beautifully designed, high quality pieces for women, men & the home. We are very grateful for our community, and our goal is to continue to build that community in a positive way.

We like to create more integrated experiences; for example, in our most recent pop up we introduced Static Swimwear–they make minimal swimwear in the most beautiful color palette. We then gave that color palette to artist Meike Legler who made custom textile art pieces that now hang on the shop walls. We thought this was a really special way to form a sort of unconscious collaboration within our space.

We are also very proud of our in-house collection, Equals Studio. We work with an organization in Peru that helps widowed mothers learn weaving skills to help build their communities through production.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We are alive, healthy, and doing what we love–we would say we have been very lucky.
