Today we’d like to introduce you to Ursie Candelario.
Ursie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always loved skincare. As a little girl, I would make face and hair masks from things I found in the kitchen and garden. As a teenager, I avoided chemicals and preservatives in my food. As an adult and registered nurse, I learned that your skin is your largest organ and your pores soak up every ingredient applied to it. That lead me to playing around with some all-natural ingredients and making skincare items. Little did I know, that was the beginning of Ursie’s Apothecary. As I started to create more products and shared some with friends, I decided that it would be fun to try selling my products at a farmers market. I spent about four years adding onto my product list, working markets all around Southern California, and in August of 2019 I opened my first shop. It has been a crazy, beautiful and fun journey.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth… I definitely wouldn’t not call this journey smooth, more like a wild ride. However, this little business did grow organically. As a mom, nurse, and small business owner juggling the three has been a complicated task to say the least. It has been taxing trying to balancing life at home, work, and the shop, but I am grateful that my business has had such a natural growth. It seemed like the business just kept moving on steadily growing and I’ve just been trying to keep up with it. Between my loyal customer base, creating new products, and the opening of our first brick and mortar store shop has lead Ursie’s Apothecary to where it is now.
Please tell us about Ursie’s Apothecary.
Tested on friends, not animals is the motto of Ursie’ s Apothecary. Not only are we a cruelty-free skin care company, we pride ourselves that all our products are free of preservatives and parabens. Products are handcrafted using only natural ingredients like real Southern California oranges, local honey, matcha green tea and hibiscus flowers. Since our ingredients are simple, recognizable and real our customers can trust what they are putting on their skin.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Southern California beaches! I have a lot of fond memories enjoying the waves and playing in the sand as a child. The beach is still my happy place and I love spending time there now with my own kids.
