Meet Unicorns At Heart

Today we’d like to introduce you to Unicorns At Heart.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Well… in the winter of 16′ we started making music in our garage with just the three of us (Rico Ryan and Gabriel) on our computer. We didn’t have a drummer at the time, just a drum machine for the early years, including when we played live. We quickly realized that we needed a drummer to play the type of music we wanted to play so Gabriel introduced us to our drummer Jordan in 2018, finally giving us the stage presence we had been trying to achieve. We had some releases from tape labels in Europe such as “...I can’t stand it anymore, I can’t look.” on Hidden Bay and “Aurora” on Z Tapes records. We had a few singles put out with Dangerbird Records in 2020 right before the lockdown happened but since the lockdown started, we had been working on a batch of demos that will eventually become our next album. While we are recording the new album, we have been working on new music videos for our previous album album “Aurora”. We honestly got to where we are today by remaining persistent and constantly being involved with our local scene.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of our first barriers is that we didn’t have a drummer early on. Bands that don’t have a drummer typically have a harder time booking shows and it almost felt like people did not take us seriously then. The only show opportunities we have had were ones we set up ourselves. Another early hurtle we experienced was finding a scene we fit in. Once we found a circle of artists that are on a similar level of operations, we were able to start to gain momentum. Like most people in 2020, the COVID 19 lockdown had some setbacks that canceled our plans for that year but also gave us the opportunity to focus on songwriting.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We try to specialize in melody, rhythms, and harmonies. We are known for being Unicorns at Heart. Something that sets us apart from the others is majority of the band members are related. We try to do everything ourselves so it will be a complete representation of our artistic vision 🙂

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
We are fairly honest people who don’t try to hide ourselves and we think that it shows in our art. Hopefully, at least. Something else we think that contributes to our success is that we have more than one songwriter in our group.
