Today we’d like to introduce you to Ulises Rodriguez.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
El Santo Golpe is a group from Riverside, California that originated in 2016. This musical project was created with the vision of bringing an original sound to the fun world of “Afro-Latin” music. Influenced by the different artistic and musical experiences in their lives, a group of close friends and family decided to create this project, where they would fuse the sounds of Cumbia, Son Jarocho, Garifuna, African Drum Beats, Poetry, Folkloric Dance and much more in our music and performances. It sounds silly to say that we have worked really hard to get to where we are now, but it is definitively true, some of our band members have families to take care of and are professionals in their respective fields, but we always find the time to get together, write music together and always with a vision of our next goal. Having these goals that we are already working towards, is what helps us keep moving and continue to assess what the next step is going to be to get to the final goal that we have created for El Santo Golpe.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Some of the challenges that we have encountered along the way in our musical career are also the blessings that have pushed us to get closer to our goals and continue to teach us valuable lessons. One of the main things that we found interesting and was a bit of challenge when we started the project, was to be able to understand what our unique sound was going to be. We are very influences by several styles of music, including local bands that we love and support, and one thing we wanted to make sure, was to create a sound that will set us apart from other artists but at the same time, it would help us be part of the amazing scene of Afro-Latin music that is taking place here in Los Angeles, the Inland Empire and all over the world.
Please tell us about El Santo Golpe.
El Santo Golpe is more than a music group, we focus on our live presentations and interaction with our crowds. We believe that music heals and if we can help someone forget their problems, even for at least 2 minutes while they enjoy one of our songs, we have done our part. One definite thing that sets us apart from other groups is the amazing and talented artists that form this group, the way we compose our music is as a collective and our taste and influences work really well together. There are many great groups out there who motivate us constantly to do better and better with every performance and composition, our goal is to one day be recognized as one of the best Afro-Latin groups in the world.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing! Every mistake and good choice that we have made has also taught us every we know and I am sure we have many more mistakes to make that will make us better and better. Without these choices we would not have the understanding that we have now in regards to the music industry and what sacrifices we need to make in order to become a successful group and provide for our families.
