Meet Tyson Blackney of Bulkbox Foods in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyson Blackney.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Tyson. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We have a serious passion for health at Bulk box Foods headquarters. My wife and co-founder, Bridgette, was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Disease and since then, we have been dedicated to working on healing her in the best possible way through nutrition, exercise, and meditation. I have had a long-standing career in international trading, logistics and food production.

It is my background, Bridgette’s diagnosis and our lifestyle change that saw the inception of our wish – for EVERYONE to have access to healthy organic food at an affordable price!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been far from a smooth road, I would say more like a bumpy road, albeit so rewarding. We knew we had something special but we had no idea how we could fulfill the process of packing our boxes and getting meat and vegetables to our consumer’s door the next day. Our home turned into a testing lab, we had boxes everywhere, eventually, we got there.

The next challenge was finding someone to perform our fulfillment. After many months talking with many different companies, we were lucky to stumble upon True Fresh HPP. Figuring out inventory management has been really tough on us because we’re dealing with perishables and next day delivery.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We’re a hybrid business, we focus on our core strengths which is our ability to buy – our procurement. With my background, we are able to buy our meat in an efficient way, we do not touch the meat from the producer, which is how we have managed to keep our costs down for our customers.

We are fully e-commerce and have a choice of three types of meat and seven vegetables, these change seasonally. We built our buy page to make it a smooth and simple process for our customers. You choose one type of meat, then you choose four vegetables, then you choose your frequency and check out. It’s pretty simple.

Our meat is grass-fed and our produce is organic. We do not pre-cut or pre-portion, we leave that up to our customer. We are focused on simple and healthy food, as we believe ‘food is medicine’.

What were you like growing up?
I was a bit of an introvert as a kid, I liked to spend time by myself, always outdoors, climbing trees, making BMX tracks through our front garden, and generally being very intrigued with nature. I spent a lot of time in the ocean, surfing, which is still a huge passion of mine. I was always thinking about what business I could create, as my dream was to be a businessman. I started creating businesses from a young age.

  • Vegetable bulk box is our cheapest at $31.99 approx 14 pounds of all our veggies
  • A meat and vegetable bulk boxes start at $41.76 – approx 4.2lbs of pork and 8lbs of veggies
  • Most expensive meat and vegetable bulk box is $65.37 – approx 5.5lbs of beef and 8lbs of veggies
