Meet Tyler Lee of Do Good Donuts & Treats in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Lee.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Tyler. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My love of making sweet treats started at seven years old in my grandma’s kitchen in California’s Central Valley. After moving down south to attend CSULB, I fell in love with the diversity & culture of Long Beach & decided to make it my home. It’s the best big city with a small town feel!

After college, my baking journey continued as I worked & managed a successful family-owned bakery in Long Beach for several years. It was during that time that I started dreaming of owning my own small business one day. I took some detours working in mental health which was amazing and hard, but rewarding. After having my first baby, I made a commitment to follow my dream of being a small business owner & set out to create a space that was a fresh & playful take on the local donut shop where I could build connection & community. I wanted to be able to work in the city I live in, be a positive force in other people’s lives and show my new daughter what determination looked like. The stars aligned and I was able to get the perfect, tiny location on Long Beach’s 4th Street Retro Row.

Do Good Donuts & Treats aims to partner with other local small business vendors & organizations, whenever possible, & to dedicate our business to the wonderful, vibrant city I love! Above all, I envision our little shop to be a place where the local community can gather to enjoy good people, good times, & good treats.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There is no such thing as a smooth road in small business. Something always comes up! Because I was really dedicated to having my shop in a particular neighborhood, I needed to do a full build out of the space I found to flip it into a food space. It was previously a bike shop and before that, storage. The build out was stressful and was not completed on time or on budget. The one thing that has gone smoothly is our support from the local neighborhood now that we are open. We were a welcomed addition to the street. As I get more experience as a small business owner, I am learning to stop doing things the hard way.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Do Good Donuts & Treats – what should we know?
Do Good Donuts & Treats is designed to be a fresh, fun take on the local donut shop. Our made-from-scratch donut recipe follows the classic cake donut, using real, simple ingredients like whole milk, nutmeg, & high-quality vanilla. We use elevated toppings like house-made seasonal jams & glazes. Our donuts are mini-sized & made-to-order so you can try a variety & enjoy them fresh every time. I am most proud that we make our donuts from scratch. I chose not to use a big commercial mix because I wanted to know every ingredient that went in to my product. Making them from scratch is a labor of love. They aren’t as consistent looking as “regular” donut shops because there aren’t stabilizers in them. They are definitely more temperamental because of that, but they sure do taste good!

We offer soft serve ice cream too! Offering one vegan option and one regular option of ice cream daily, there is something for everyone. There’s nothing more nostalgic to us than a chocolate dipped ice cream cone. Somehow, every one gives you a great, big smile when you hand them one. We seriously love making soft serve ice cream cones.

We opened Do Good Donuts & Treats in Long Beach because it’s the city we live in & love. Our mission is to celebrate goodness. We have created a space for community to gather & enjoy good people, good times, & good treats.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Determination. Resilience. A good support system. More determination.
