Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Hjorting and Lexi Obrien.
Tyler and Lexi, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After paying an outrageous amount of rent to live in southern California, only ever visiting three or four other states and not having a mortgage, we realized there was no reason to be tied to one spot. We saved, sold and planned a year-long budget to travel the country but first needed something we could drive and live in.
We researched vans, shuttle buses and eventually stumbled upon the rapidly growing world of school bus conversions, aka Skoolies. That is when One Wild Ride was born. It is our journey through the United States in a self-converted school bus turned a tiny home!
We focus on living minimally while traveling to some of the coolest places in the country. Whether it is skating, surfing, hiking or motocross we are always on the lookout for the next adventure. Our goal is to show people that there is an alternative way of living that allows you to do just that, live!
Has it been a smooth road?
Living this nomadic lifestyle is by no means easy. Social media makes it out to be this lavish permanent vacation, but there are daily struggles that come with constantly moving. We have had multiple breakdowns, nowhere to stay, kicked out of places, stuck in storms and attempted burglaries. We have been forced to spend nights in some pretty awful places, but the good always outweighs the bad and the amazing spots we have stayed, and things we have seen make it all worth it!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
One Wild Ride is a lifestyle. It is more than just a school bus conversion. It is apparel inspired by adventure. Most importantly, it is a way of life that people can achieve that are sick of the norm. The idea is to get out of your comfort zone. One Wild Ride could be biking across the country, sailing around the world or climbing the tallest mountains. We are all about getting out there and going for it.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
We began our journey in Los Angeles in the South Bay with tons of support from friends and family. Although One Wild Ride is not based out of one specific area, we can’t deny the fact that this city has inspired us to set goals and to go for them. We travel the country representing a lifestyle that can be taken anywhere. But whenever we are skateboarding down the Hermosa Beach strand or biking to the Redondo pier, it always reminds us where One Wild Ride came from.
