Meet Tuyet Huynh of Busy Bee Sweet in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tuyet Huynh.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
During my college years, I used to work at a bakery as a cashier. They were short on cake decorator, so my boss asked me to try decorating cakes and it turns out, I am pretty good at hand made decorations. After I had my first baby, I quit the bakery to stay at home with my baby and still continue to finish my bachelor’s degree. Meanwhile, I decided to start baking cakes for family and friends… I had my first client who was one of my friend’s sister. The design of cake looked nice, however. I could not get the taste down correctly. I mean it was totally horrible. She kindly gave me some feedback and didn’t ask for refund.

Thanks to her kindness, I decided not give up on myself and keep pushing myself to continue baking. I research and study many types of cake recipes on YouTube. It took a couple of years as I had no baking knowledge what so ever. In order for me to perfect my recipe, I asked my sister to be my test subject, LOL. Finally, I was able to nailed down the recipe. Soon after that, my business started to take off and with the help of families, friends and social media, gain quite a decent amount of followers that loved my baking. With the support of everyone it helped boosted my confidence even more. After baking cake for a year or so, I also found a new love with decorating sugar cookies and as of now, I am currently decorating cookies only at the moment. I still feel there is so much more to learn and still consider myself a student in the baking business. One last thing, I want to let it be known that, with lots of practice, failure, support from others and not giving up on myself, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Thank you everyone for the love and support!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course, everything was hard at the beginning. There was many times where I struggled and wanted to give up with baking because I didn’t train nor study to be a professional baker. It was very hard to start the business from just being home base as I didn’t have any type of marketing to get the business going.

Busy Bee Sweet – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My home-based business specializes in custom cakes and cookies. I offer high detail quality and delicious taste. The one thing I am mostly proud of is my detail cookies that I provide to customers. I believe the thing that sets me apart from others’ in the same field is my ideas of unique and customs designs. I normally allow my customers to gives his/her input on the theme of the designs and I will then incorporate it and add it to the uniqueness and customs design of the cake or cookie.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My definition of success is having to work hard, practice, never giving up on yourself, and the biggest part is to inspire others. “You can do anything as long as you have the passion, the drive, the focus and the support. – Sabrina Bryan”

Having a great support system around you is an extra boost to push you to want to become successful. My criteria is always to put everything I have into my designs and making sure it meet or go beyond my client’s expectation. Being able to see or hear my clients say they really love it or it’s way better then what he/she was expecting is one of the best feelings for me because it lets me know that I didn’t fail them.
