Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Kaintz.
Michael, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Planning and the wedding industry has been in my DNA from the start. As a little boy, I used to take my treasure troll dolls and marry them off; using a little bow tie for one doll and a few pieces of toilet paper to create a veil and wedding dress for the other doll. My mom was a single mother and she didn’t have the funds to provide me with the toys and goods that most kids around me had, but I never let that stop me from being creative and resourceful with what I had at my disposal. In my teenage years, I ended up getting into theater and I used my talents to begin a dance/coordinating company at my High School (South Gate High), where I taught traditional Mexican Waltz for my friends Quinceañeras. It then turned into coordinating for others and then once I hit college, I developed my first actual business “Just Dance Entertainment.” I began to give my peers in my college dance classes jobs by performing at various parties and entertaining the guests during dinner. It ended up being very successful, with just small business cards and word of mouth being used to promote what we did.
My journey then leads me to direct and choreograph beauty pageants, perform in front of thousands in a grand theater, however with so much success at a young age, I ended up taking those opportunities I had for granted and lost sight of what I was really in the industry for and ended up having to shut close down. This was a point in my life where I was at rock bottom and unfortunately didn’t realize what I had until it was gone, as cliché as it sounds. I ended up having to work my way back up from the bottom, where I found myself working at Starbucks, then getting an opportunity to work as a front desk association in the hotel industry. It wasn’t until I found myself working as a private event coordinate for a well renowned Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes that I started to find my passion again for the wedding/event planning industry. I came to realize that throughout all of my previous jobs, that my potential was being underestimated and underutilized, and that something was truly missing from my life.
With time, I became more and more aware that my soul needed to do something beyond being behind a desk and stuck in an office space. I decided to take the plunge, after lots of long talks and support from my husband and ended up leaving the stability of my office job, to embrace being an entrepreneur under the age of thirty. That is when True Luxe Events was born and can honestly say I have never been happier. Although it hasn’t been easy, it has been such a rewarding experience that has brought me pure joy and allowed me to share my true passion with the world. I can honestly say that no matter where you grew up or what hardships you faced throughout your life, anyone is capable of doing anything as long as they have determination, dedication, hard work and a dream.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path to getting where I am now has definitely had its’ bumps. I think the biggest struggle came when I first started the company, as I had a difficult time coming to terms with leaving behind everything that I had accomplished in my professional life since I had to build myself from the ground up. So to leave it all to start from the ground up again and to face an uncertain future, took a bit of an emotional and mental toll in the beginning, but I was able to overcome that with the support and reassurance from my husband, family and friends, that I was making the right decision. Thankfully I have been blessed with amazing clients so far and there have been very little bumps along the way, but I will say that it has been eye opening to witness the extent of discrimination that still exists in our World, even within the event industry. There have been times where I have lost out on an opportunity because a client is afraid of how I will be perceived by certain members of their family, or simply because I am a male in a predominately female industry. I have been warned by clients that a member of their family may say something inappropriate to me because of their religious or political views. Not being hired because of who you are as an individual is something no one should ever face. I can proudly say that I have never allowed those instances to bring me down though, but have grown from them and become more grateful to those who celebrate my bubbly personality and allow me to make their events special by staying true to myself and always being fabulous!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about True Luxe Events – what should we know?
True Luxe Events is a boutique planning, designing, and coordinating company that prides itself in ensuring our clients have an exceptional and memorable event. We get to know our clients on a personal level so that we can help guide them through what can be a rather stressful journey and allow them to have an amazing time throughout up until the end of their event. We are known for being extremely professional and passionate about the services we provide while also turning our client’s dreams into realities…
As a company, I would say that I am most proud of being able to provide jobs and opportunities to others who share the same passion for this industry as me and for those who are simply trying to get their foot in the door. Being able to motivate others to reach their full potential, mentoring them, and most of all being an example they can follow is so incredibly fulfilling.
What sets us apart from other planning companies is that everything we do involves passion and a purpose. When we design our events, we want to create an experience that truly lasts from beginning to end and allows our clients and their guests be transported to a place that allows them to forget their lives outside of that moment. One of the most pronounced ways we stand apart is that I am a male in a predominantly female industry, so it brings a different perspective that allows me to excel in providing truly unique events.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being able to stay true to myself, while always remaining open and honest with my clients and partners are qualities that I hold near and dear to my heart, which I truly believe has led to the success my company has had. My approach to everything I do is to always present my best self and to provide my clients with recommendations that I truly stand by. This allows for our clients to feel secure and confident in that the right decisions are being made for them. My philosophy in life has always been that “All Are Welcome,” and I can only do that if I allow people to see who I really am as a human being first.
