Meet Tro DerSarkissian and Aris Andreasian of Jewel City CrossFit in Glendale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tro DerSarkissian and Aris Andreasian.

Aris and Tro were both extremely into fitness. Aris grew up playing competitive tennis and played D1 for LMU all throughout his college career. Tro has always been excited about fitness, and often found himself using it as an outlet to blow off steam and considered it to be therapeutic.

Tro had been introduced to CrossFit by a friend in 2008, and in 2011, both Tro and Aris joined their first CrossFit gym in Pasadena, CA. In early 2013, the opportunity presented itself to start their own CrossFit gym, and they jumped on it, and here we are now.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think owning a business is ever a smooth road. We’ve had many ups and downs, but we’ve always been lucky to have each other for support. We both add value in different ways and are good at uniquely different things, so I think we compliment each other well. I truly believe that being a successful partnership has a lot to do with respecting and understanding boundaries and responsibilities and doing your best to show that your full effort is being given to the task at hand, and I think both Aris and I understand what we contribute and do it well. It’s been a learning process, but it was never really difficult for us to have that understanding and balance.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Jewel City CrossFit – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
At our core, we are a CrossFit gym that offers CrossFit and various other High Intensity style classes to improve metabolic conditioning, strength, and core work. What really sets us apart is our community. As cliche as that might sound, our biggest value is in our community. I highly encourage you to join in on a class, and you’ll immediately understand what I’m talking about. We have so many different personalities, who come with the intention of getting a good sweat in and improving their quality of life, both within the world of health and strength, as well as socially. We’ve provided the foundation for new and strong friendships, relationships. Some of our members didn’t know each other before our doors opened in October of 2013, and now some are best friends, some have become co-workers and colleagues, and some are even married!

This was never intentionally designed but is definitely a byproduct of the people Jewel City has attracted and the community that has developed because of it. It’s tough to claim the either Aris or I were solely responsible for this family we’ve built, I think each member has added their own personal shade of color and that has somehow developed into this really crazy canvas. We have people who show up to see one another, without working out. Maybe they’ve already done the wod (workout of the day) in the morning, and want to see a friend in the evening. Or want to reconnect with an old friend. I think outside of offering a safe, fun and comfortable place to workout, our real value lies in our community.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
No big changes planned yet, we are considering adding different kinds of programs, but we need to make sure they’re the right fit before you make any changes.
